hello dear everyone!
something has happened to that whole in my camera where i put the screw from my tripod, i am sorry i don't know what it's called :D
only bigger screws hold the camera now, but i have two very good tripods and not going to buy a new one soon.
is there anything i could do? i tried to put some thick fabric inside but the screw from the tripod just cut it.
i can't afford getting my cam repaired now either.

please tell me i can fix it myself!

Sounds like it's stripped out...not a whole lot that I know you can do about that...call a repair shop near you and ask...it might be a quick fix and hopefully cheep. better than your camera falling off and breaking :(

one other thing...I leave my "mounting plate" on all the time...I don't take it on and off...maybe you could put something in the screw hole (female side) to lock the nut (male side) into place...BUT that will put that plate on there forever...or so I think

Svetlana,

"Tripod Socket" is what I have heard it called. It does sound as if you have stripped your threads in the socket. This happens mostly when you're trying to mount the camera in a hurry and "cross-thread" the screw, wiping out the threads. But that usually happens with cheaper cameras with inadequate threads; the 5D is quite good in that regard. This is one of the main reasons for using quick-release plates to mount tripods; they stay on the camera forever and eliminate this problem. Plus, of course, they allow you to snap your camera on and off the tripod in a jiffy.

Replacing the socket is not that big a deal, incidentally; it's a removable part. But it has to be done by a repair shop.

Sorry for your troubles, but it's great to see you back in DPC :-)

thank you Janine and Robert!
yes, exactly what Robert said, i used to almost always have that plate on my cam, but i had to change it once because i was using somebody's tripod, not mine and since then it went bad:(
i just can't repair it now, it costs around $350-400 to do it in norway:) ( 2000-3000 krones)
but next time i'm in russia, mmm.... :D
