    Got Toast?
    by arnit

    The idea

The first idea I got was to shoot someone sitting down with a basketball over his head. But I wasn't satisfied with that... I thought it was too normal. Then when I was driving home from McDonalds I thought... why not use a toaster? I called my uncle (the guy on the picture) and asked him if he could help me. He was willing to help me so we went toaster-hunting. I found a store that sells old stuff and bought a toaster for about 6 dollars and it had one week guaranty. I also bought a bowl for just over a dollar. Then we went and toasted two slices of bread at my home and then drove out of town to find a location to shoot.

    The Location

I wanted to shoot the picture somewhere that you don't usually see a toaster. I found a pretty nice spot just out of town. It took us only 15 minutes to drive.

    The shot

It didn't took me long to set up the shot. Here are some shots that I made while I was setting up and then the final shot. Some people thought it would be better if I had placed the subject on either the left side of the frame or the right. I thought it looked best with the subject in the center of the frame. There are alot of oppositions in the picture. The toaster (electricity) vs. nature. And there are of course some complimentary colors. The brown toast vs. the brown in the ground. The blue sky vs. the blue jeans.

Not happy with the houses on the top and the shadows were bad. I was quite happy with this setup. Placed my unkle in the frame to see how it would be.
He threw the toaster in the air and I was too close so I didn't catch the toaster in the shot. I moved backwards and tried it again.
At first he was afraid the toaster would hit him on the head.
    Here is the burst sequence.
Here is the shot before adjustments. Here is the shot after cropping it and some level adjustments. Rules-of-thirds.
    My submission.
I wasn't sure if I should send this one or my Got Toast? picture.
