This is the same model I used for my underwater shoot. She's a joy to work with, and we wanted to work together again. As soon as this challenge was announced, I knew what I wanted to shoot. My original intent to was to do an interpretation of Herb Alpert's Whipped Cream album cover. As with most of my interpretations, it really doesn't look anything like the original, but I'm pleased with the result.

This was a rather "craft-heavy" shoot, and I had a lot of fun creating the cake hat. I also did a lot of research to see what I should use for the "whipped cream", and pretty much everyone said shaving cream because whipped cream just melted too fast. I decided to use both, with the whipped cream reserved just for the portions near her face and of course, anything she put in her mouth!

I first set down a sheet of plastic over which I'd be creating the scene, to make clean up easier. This ended up being a plus and a minus, as clean up WAS a cinch, but my full body images (which were really cool as they had candies strewn around the feet) were unusable as I could not satisfactorily edit the plastic portion. Before creating the outfit, I set up the lights as close to what I wanted as possible, in order to maximize shooting time with my creams. Then I constructed her "wardrobe" while she was sitting in place. This is about 10 yards of pink and white tulle, tucked and clamped in strategic places. At one point, I absentmindedly licked one of my fingers, thinking it was whipped cream. It wasn't....

I shot two different versions: one with the hat, and the other with just a big glop of cream on her head, as in the original. But the hat won out :-)

Thinking I might need a LOT of shaving cream, I bought 8 cans, and ended up using just one! Anyone want some shaving cream...???

YAY for you!! You aren't going to belive me but when I saw this I thought of Herb Albert, and the cover, which I still have!!! I actually dug it out ... he has more whipped cream LOL

Magic Magic Magic and original Johanna. Not just the exhausting and pro props but the light on them flowers and boosterflies! What fun! My old man drove us crazy with Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass LP's at dinner time. I remember a song called Tijuana Taxi, that got faster and faster and I ran around the couch like a touched Chihuahua on speed...as the song gained momentum... hehe thanks for rekindling the memories.

Congratulations, Johanna. A very upstanding entry. I knew how tough especially to decorated that hat with soft icing cream bcoz my wife operated a cake shop. This is an excellent advert shot. Well done!

I'm going to be completely honest with you, adventurous photographer, the first thing I said when I stumbled upon this astonishing exposure of yours was: "Holy s***"

And in my book, that earns you some pointage.

Although, I do have to say, upon closer inspection, there appears to be some sort of processing discrepancy around the subject. Very odd.
