Challenge: Euphemisms (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-50D
Lens: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM
Location: Madison, WI
Date: Feb 28, 2012
Aperture: 5.0
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/250
Date Uploaded: Feb 28, 2012

Took me a while to come up with a euphemism I wanted to shoot. Most of the were dirty or just not interesting as a subject. But then I ended up thinking about euphemisms for "dumb people" and quickly came to this. During the day before rollover I was thinking about how I would setup the knifes, how I would light the scene, and how I would compose the shallow depth of field shot.

Got home from work late, so luckily with my mental preparation I was able to get the photo taken in less than 10 minutes, then spent a good bit longer processing the entry. I wanted to really show off the textures of this image, as those seem to play well with the subject.

Lighting for this was a single flash, gelled with 1/4 CTO, and a diffuser attached. This was shot through an umbrella, pointed down towards the knifes from camera right. This setup provided a very soft light that also helped reveal the details well.

Post Processing;
* Retouch out some water/dirt spots
* Nik HDR Efex Pro on a single exposure - helped define the details more than Topaz for this shot
* Increase black point
* Increase definition
* S-curve
* Export as TIFF
* Resize
* Sharpen Edges
* Save as JPEG

I thought this might do well. Nice, illustration-like processing.

good one! Very crisp and sharp, no pun intended. I also like the colors and the clean refection, very nice.

I was wondering when this one would come it - it was inevitable. I like the reverse resolution from foreground to background and the tonality of the image is very nice. Well done.

This was another one I almost chose. Glad I didn't now, because this shot is FAR superior to what I would have produced. I love it. The woodgrain detail, the sharpness of the overall photo. The focal point. It works perfectly together. Great job
