Challenge: Off With Their Head! (Advanced Editing VII)
Collection: 2012 Challenge shots
Date: Apr 15, 2012
Date Uploaded: Apr 15, 2012

[Apr. 22nd, 2012 10:04:55 AM]

I'm so surprised that this one is doing well. I never expected it. I thought it was interesting, but I didn't expect it to get this much attention. Thanks for the wonderful comments!

It actually was just an experiment. My family went up to the pipeline walkway in Richmond. I was watching the great blue herons, my daughter was drawing/writing, and my son and husband were fishing.

My daughter found a spot to sit:

and I wandered the walkway above.

I was getting way too dark for nature photography, so I just tried a couple of shots, cutting off people's heads. I was getting pretty dark, so the original shot actually was a bit grainy, and very flat. I'm in my contrasty b&w phase, so I thought I'd give it a shot with processing, and was surprised and intrigued with the results.

Again -- thanks for the wonderful comments! I love these types of challenges. This is a shot that I never would have taken if it wasn't for DPC. We need more of these exploration challenges!

I love it that this did well. So simple, but I would not have thought of it.

Congrats on the top ten finish. This was one of my favorites for a ribbon. I liked it for the story I see where the head wasn't necessary, if that makes sense.

I like this one, as the hand and page really tell the story and no need for a head. The white of the page is a little too bright and distracts, but overall a nice concept.

A very moody and fine photo, it would be nice if we were all like that page. 8

Lovely composition, nice use of light, and a very appropriate intepretation - headless with a blank page. Nicely done.
