Challenge: Motion Panning IV (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-50D
Lens: Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Location: Verona, WI
Date: Apr 25, 2012
Aperture: 9
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/30

Ok, not exactly his first swing experience ever, but pretty close (within a few days). It's extremely difficult getting a motion panning photo of a kid on a swing. Being an arch movement, it's harder to follow at the appropriate speed than a straight line. Plus, with him coming somewhat at me (instead of me looking completely from the side, as is seen in a lot of motion panning shots), the focus plane becomes a hundred times more difficult to get right. Plus, I needed a small enough aperture to get a longer shutter speed, but not too small so the background is out of focus. I actually tried on a sunny day, and then waited for a cloudy day to try again.

I'm certain this has no chance to win, and may not even stay above 5, although those understanding the difficulties mentioned above may score it a little higher than those that just say "it's a kid on a swing, how hard is that?"

Great shot. It is hard to tell if he is enjoying it or not.

Perfect use of technique... should have cropped tighter on the kid because the background is so dull...
