Challenge: In the Rain (Expert Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-50D
Lens: Canon EF-S 15-85mm IS USM
Location: Verona, WI
Date: May 17, 2012
Aperture: 11

This is easily the most expert edited photo I have ever entered to date. This shot was actually on a very sunny morning, with just a few wispy clouds in the very distance. I had been hoping for rain to take this shot all week, but it never came, so I instead figured I would try my hand at creating a rain effect.

I think I did pretty well. Started off by making the scene look dark, added in the clouds, and then the rain. Tried my hand at making the water extra ripply, but couldn't quite get it right. Luckily the various birds in the water made it so there are some natural ripples, but I still feel like I may get dinged for this.

Post Processing:
* Straighten
* Crop
* Topaz B&W Effects - with transparecy to make sunny scene look gloomy
* Pixelmator to add clouds
** Added new layer
** Generated black and white clouds
** Motion blur (I want my clouds to have a bit of motion because of the falling rain indicating a long exposure)
** Selected sky color
** Add layer mask
** Set layer blending to Soft Light and reduced opacity
* Pixelmator to add rain using the technique found here: //www.pixelmator.com/tutorials/rain-effect/
** I had to make some modifications
*** I adjusted the clouds in step 3 by choosing light grey as the secondary color, increased size by about 2x, and gausian blured. This made sure there were fewer bright spots.
*** I used a layer opacity of 60% in step 5 to bring out more rain
*** I increase the Radius of the motion blur in step 6 to about 15px, with a 70 degree angle
* Increase definition
* Increase saturation with lower vibrancy
* Levels
* Export as TIFF
* Resize
* Sharpen Edges
* Save as JPEG

So after spending all this time thinking I did a great job editing, my wife tells me it kinda looks realistic, but not really. She couldn't give me a reason why. We'll see how it does in voting.

i don't see enough ripples in the water to correspond to the amount of "rain" that has been added...
