Hi Herman,
Very brave effort and actually not such a bad result considering.
Gooseberries when ripe are wonderful fruit. I use them in fruit salad when available.
Perhaps a tad harsh light but overall nicely done. Also I'd maybe have cut one or more open and placed next to the lantern.
The comments are what astounded me. I have these low scoring high commented images too. I think it's the reason we are still here :) Comments!

Herman, I should have warned you that my liking this image would be a death knell for your score :P

Yes, there are some things that could make it better from a technical standpoint, but all the same, it is a lovely image. As far as challenges go, I think the one thing to take from this is connectivity with the voters, and it would appear that the title could have helped that.

Lovely details and it's nice to see the berry inside, but the light is very harsh and the whole is very centered.

Voted earlier coming back to comment now.

This is one time I wish the title would give me a better clue as to what the fruit(?) is. I love the texture on the skin and how the light illuminates the warm golden center within. But I am one in your audience who has never had the experience of tasting this much less the knowledge of knowing what it is to fully appreciate why this is a tasty treat (going to give it the benefit of the doubt that it tastes good and it is not a cultural delicacy like Durian Fruit where non natives find it hard to stomach). I think it might improve the visual impact of this being a dessert/sweet if the composition had an arrangement of elements to increase the visual impact. Perhaps if you had three in a pleasing arrangement on a black plate or just something that would add an additional visual clue to those of us who are lacking knowledge of this edible treat. The fruit in the composition is just placed on a black backdrop with no arrangement to hold the eye's attention for a long span.

I love the concept and the way the photo is cropped so that the subject sits on the bottom of the frame. The backlighting is mostly even but some of the highlights are a little over-exposed.

I'm at a loss unfortunately as to what this is..guess I should get out more. interesting lighting but this doesn't scream desert to me.

I like the concept, too bad the backlight has blown through the fruit.

Do they last that long? I'd eat it in ten! I like the idea, almost looks like it's glowing. Nitpick: not so fond of the harsh light on the stem side. I do love the network pattern from the leaf wrap thinger (that's totally a botanical term!).

... why did I suddenly start thinking about aliens? Better move on...

This is a tough challenge to vote. I'm torn between "what are you trying to do here" and "what do I expect here". Further complicating matters is the question "what would I do here".

What I would expect would be a technically strong piece of eye-candy that would present the dessert in a way that I would want to at least sample it, if not order it. Along these lines I'm looking at technicals: backgrounds, distracting elements, exposure, sharpness. I'm also looking for creativity, imagination, and originality, which can make up for less than perfect technicals.

So, where does this leave me with your image?

Absolutely divine! This would make a great piece of wall art. If possible, you should do a series, at least two more. Then you could license them to the people that sell frame wall art pieces at places like Bed, Bath & Beyond.

I think I should know what this is. that being said, I'll make the leap that it is an edible fruit. That being assumed, I love the capture its elegant and perfectly lit. 10, 10, 10.

Terrific photo, but it doesn't seem too dessert-like (although, one of my favorites). It's that there is no context that suggests that it's being served as a meal component.
