Challenge: Mystery Word Triptych (Advanced Editing VII*)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D Mark II

Date: Jul 17, 2012

My 'secret word' was 'Abuse'.

Of course, this is staged. A very good friend agreed to help me with these images (thank you) and my daughter once again tested her acting abilities (and then received Macca's for dinner!)

I'm expecting this to receive some negative feedback. It's not quite a warm and fuzzy or stunningly beautiful take on the challenge, however this issue is very close to my heart.

It needs to stop. Now.

[Jul. 21st, 2012 09:25:49 PM]

This has proved interesting. I haven’t received the negative feedback I was expecting. Thank you.

The entire series took less than 15 minutes to shoot and not too long processing each image. It took me longer to put it into a triptych than it did to do any other part of it. I’ve spent longer taking pictures of glass paperweights. The more I look at these images, the more of the story they tell. I didn’t realise why this series came together so ‘easily’ for me until I sat down and thought about it. I’ve always been good at telling the truth.

In response to Wendy's comment about wondering what the girl thinks of herself in this series... well, it's my daughter and I hadn't even thought to ask her, so I did:

Me: "What do you think about being in this photo? Do you know what it's about?"

Her: "No, not really. I just do these things because you tell me to. (She was smiling at the time)
I don't really care about photos and knowing what they're about as much as you do. I don't mind being in them but I don't really care what they're about."

I'm pretty sure she is a reasonably secure individual who feels safe and loved (no matter what her crazy mother asks her to do!).

OK, so there's 19hrs left until rollover and this is currently a new PB for me at 7.17 (by the barest of margins - 0.0259). It will probably drop, given that the majority of my images seem to drop a bit before rollover. Regardless of whether it makes a PB (I don't think it'll ribbon - there's some great stuff in this challenge) I'm in awe of some of the comments left - thank you everyone. You give me hope for the world.

[Jul. 26th, 2012 07:17:33 PM]

4 3/4 hrs before rollover and I have to go to work grrrr (can't check it there, will have to check surreptitiously on my phone). Thanks again everyone for your comments.

....oooo00oooo....

Wow, Red! I thought maybe TT, not red! Especially with this subject. Thanks everyone for your comments.

I said it in another thread, but this should have beaten mine by a mile. What an incredibly powerful set of images. It really should be made into a billboard for the world to see. Huge congrats on a profile shot -- and if I could trade ribbons, I would! It's been quite awhile since I've given a 10. :)

Each image well composed and strong enough to stand on its own. Together reminds me of a graphic novel. Excellent job.

Well done ... disturbing but I love it when a photog brings us a point of view that's so powerful. Thanks. I can't agree more ... abuse MUST stop.

Child abuse. Strong image would make a good poster. I don't particularly like the over processing but its a matter of personal preference 9

wow!! someone is thinking. I'm guessing the mystery word you have nominated is "abuse" but many other words could fit. The middle image has much impact and I applaud your use of it here....great work

Unsure what exactly you're going for here - violence, pain, abuse, anger, resentment, broken, rough...
overall this picture is technically sound but too dark for my taste - the notion of abusing the young girl is unforgivable to me as an action; the red border makes the eyes look very evil in the first frame, yet do not stand out enough for the rest of the image to be distinct borders when focusing on the subject of the image.
i'd give this a 6 on the technicals overall (8 for the photographic skill) but a 1 if i was voting for 'what this image stirs in me'. i'm quite torn on how to vote it as i don't like promoting this for the content (despite the fact the title says it's intolerable), but would hate to see it end up too low as it has better technicals than many others i've seen...

gritty, powerful, and creepy. I hate to see this expressed in photography, and I wonder what the girl thinks of herself in this series. I also wonder if you're getting marked down for touching a taboo subject. If it makes people flinch, are they seeing that as a negative or a positive in the voting process.

Abuse, I assume.

This should take blue with a high 7 or 8.

I also think it should be sent out to shelters and agencies and put on billboards. Very powerful stuff. Fascinating decision on the crop on the left. I so badly want to see the eyes. It draws you in even more.
