I have a tendency to just take closeups of things, so I wanted to try to at least change it up a little.

I really like shots where the subject is on the edge of the frame and partially cut off, but I never think of doing it. So that was my first goal.

I also like negative space, and rarely do that, so that was my second goal.

But just the dessert and the negative space just didn't feel right on this one. So I brought in the fork!

It was a lot more difficult that I expected. I tried the fork in many different places and different angles, and this was actually the only one that felt right. Turning the fork upside down seemed to make it flow better.

What a fun challenge! What an incredible amount of comments! I'm sorry to see this one come to an end.

Thanks, everyone!!

Interesting. You have competing subject in this photo, but it somehow works well.

This is a very good entry. I love how the fork leads the eye into the dessert and the color of the plate is only slightly darker than the background so as not to distract from the main subject. The cropping choice is excellent and the little extra space at the top gives room for the converging lines of the rolls to lead away.

my top pick for the challenge with a 9, i think its wendy's judging by the fork and the style, id like just a little more contrast between the plate and the background and the top white layer and the yellower sponge above it. nice composition although the fork steals a lot of the cakes thunder....

Not sure the right hand side should have been cropped off.

Lovely image! Something is missing for me so, bot sure what it is. The plate is too washed out in my opinion, but still wonderful image! 8

Very well done, 9. Missed perfection by just a little detail: the fork 's end is just a tad too much out of focus

This might be my favorite. I love the cropping, the focus, and the balance. I *might* like to see more color, but then again, it seems to be holding its own just fine.

This is a tough challenge to vote. I'm torn between "what are you trying to do here" and "what do I expect here". Further complicating matters is the question "what would I do here".

What I would expect would be a technically strong piece of eye-candy that would present the dessert in a way that I would want to at least sample it, if not order it. Along these lines I'm looking at technicals: backgrounds, distracting elements, exposure, sharpness. I'm also looking for creativity, imagination, and originality, which can make up for less than perfect technicals.

So, where does this leave me with your image?

Nice idea and subject, all well-shot. Just not too sure about the composition.

The cake does look tasty:-) I like how you placed the fork on the diagonal to act as a path that the eye travels along to arrive at the cake. The tradeoff is that we only see 1/2 of this sweet treat leaving us craving more (both a plus and minus). In a way, the main subject of the shot is the fork with the cake becoming the supporting cast. I am craving to see more of that cake the more I look at this shot. The plain white backdrop allows the cake to stand out visually but the minus is that if gives off a feeling/mood of being stark and cold. On the PC it looks fine but on the laptop where the screen is brighter the defining edges of the square cake slice where the vanilla portion and especially the white cream filling gets lost and 'blends' into the white BG. It is a good shot but I feel a background with a warm color tones would complement the cake and create a mood that is both warm and inviting thereby further increasing the visual appeal of the photo. Another suggestion is if you want to keep the white backdrop then a way to make sure those edges of the cake don't get lost is to 'gently' take some of the chocolate frosting and lightly brush it onto the edge of the cake (the suggestion is to do it in real life before snapping the shot - not something in photoshop:-) ) But don't overdo it - it should look as natural as the slight brown (graham cracker crust?) of the edge that is just below the the chocolate filling on the bottom layer.

This has to be vawendy.
Putting this higher than the rest of the dessert entries simply because someone decided centering the dessert wasn't necessary.

the cake is beautiful but, on my monitor at least, the detail seems to be lost by fill lighting. This would be spectacular against a light brown , orange, ecru or green backing.
