 Tonemapped from a single raw file using Photomatix.
It was almost dark when I took this six second exposure. Heavy rain and dark clouds make the right hand side of the picture look much darker and also give a diffused glow to the lights of Liverpool and Bootle.

Beautiful image and I like your simile - I have often thought that a lighthouse keeper's existence must have been a very solitary one and the feel of distance you have achieved here emphasizes that. Congratulations on the HM.

Nice leading line out to the lighthouse with the rocks, and the horizon lights balance it out nicely, but those HDR light blooms are really distracting. They burn my eyes on what is otherwise a very cool toned image.

Selectively pasting in details from of the original exposure for light blooms after an HDR usually works pretty well for me.

It looks like the horizon is on fire! I don't know that I like such a level of glow, but this is a gorgeous image.

i really enjoy the horizon. the blur and color of the lights looks like the ocean has been set ablaze!
I'm going to assume this is Bear due to the lighthouse-ness of the image :)
