Smoke plume from the fire between Cub Lake and Fern Lake. 673 acres. West of "The Pool". We had upslope conditions on this first day afternoon, which pushed low clouds up against the higher level wind flow pushing the smoke plume in a SE direction.

I'm honored to have my "Fern Lake Fire Day 1" image selected as Earth Science Photo-of-the Day for October 14, 2012.

The thing that strikes me about this, after the initial shock and awe, is how even the trees look nervous and scattered, trying to get away from the fire.

In spite of the fact that this is a result of devastating fire, it's a beautiful photo. I never tire of your Colorado landscapes.

Great capture of the smoke tainted clouds. They almost look to be flaming.
