Challenge: Mirrors (Advanced Editing II)
Camera: Canon EOS-300D Rebel
Location: UK
Date: Sep 7, 2004
Aperture: F18
ISO: 100
Shutter: 8 seconds
Galleries: Black and White, Transportation
Date Uploaded: Sep 7, 2004

Taken at my local station, this is the 20:08 (running 4 minutes late!) I took this photo in RAW and desaturated bofore saving as TIFF. I used some dodge and Burn to bring out the highlights in the mirrors.

I assume that the mirrors are used by the train drivers to view the platform before leaving the station?

:-)

My first top ten... thanks to everyone for their constructive comments...

A few people have asked how I got the effect:

I set up and composed for the mirrors and the platform. I fired off some test shots to judge exposure whilst waiting for the train.

I waited for the train to stop and started the long exposure just before it began moving off. This effectively froze the image of the passenger, as the train moved away it created the motion blur.

(As for the positioning of the lone passenger in the shot. I got lucky!)

Regards

Chris

Very evocative image. This really is something special. This is a shot you should be proud of. I can't begin to express the concepts and emotions it stirs in me. Its truly inspirational. Its got all the depth and complexity of an existentialist novel. This image proves that a picture is worth a thousand words.

Very clever ... there's so much to process here but the mirror is still the center of my attention. I don't know if this will do well here but I hope it does because it is so ... different. A ten from me of course.

I'd liked to see the passenger's face in the mirror :) Oh well, good one .

The passenger is very cool although I'm not sure how it relates to the mirror. Good shot.

Great picture of the train, the passenger still in the picture makes for a fantastic effect. Although I dont think the mirror plays a big enough role in this picture, to me its secondary. But other than that a great pic.

This is just a completely fascinating shot. Superb!! I'm going to assume that the sign posts are holding mirrors or some sort of reflective surface (it's hard to tell what they are) and am scoring it high. It is such a great shot and deserves to be up there. I hope others see it that way as well. Excellent!

Wow this is fantastic. Great idea, strong and simple title, good tones. The mirror is not a major element in the picture, the shot would be good without it.

Very striking image in terms of motion, perspective, contrasts and detail. I also likethe subtle capture of the passenger and the repetition introduced by the mirror, the train windows, the station lights, the poles, the bricks, etc. Congratulations on a really nice submission.

amazing photo but maybe not for this challenge.
I love the black and white used and the motion of the train but still the clarity of the person inside. well done, an outstanting capture

I was hoping for a little more from the "mirror" in the photo. But I do love the blurred motion effect. Good luck in the challenge!
