The beginning of the bighorn breeding season. The light in the high elevations of Colorado is typically very high contrast. The air is dry, thin and non-polluted. There is very little to cause light dispersion. Normally, I do wildlife photography on bright overcast days, or in shaded situations. With 330 days of sunshine per year, it's easier to photograph in the full sun, but the light can be very harsh at midday. This was about 11 AM. With the sun fairly low in the sky, it worked okay, but the shadows cast are dark. That may bother some people, but it is a high contrast challenge.
This ram is about 9 years old and at the peak of his game.

Last hour change to b&w.

Seems like voters are a little confused about High Key and High Contrast. My image is definitely not high key. But, it is high contrast.

Really enjoyed this one in the challenge, I gave it an 8. I think the high contrast and the b&w work well together to make this pop.

Very nice shot, busy yes, but you can't walk up to him and ask him to move to a better spot; 7 from me

Richard, yet another wonderful ram shot!

While I agree with you that it is high contrast at the micro level, the extent of the textures throughout created by the background and the coat of the animal give the image a decidedly gray feel on the larger scale. Hence, it comes across as lower contrast because there are not large sections of dark and light to provide the overt contrast viewers expected.

Gorgeous animal! Would prefer that he stood out from the background a tad more; it just feels busy to me. But he's really impressive in that bright sunlight. The light and shadows really bring out his musculature.

A gorgeous animal, looking over his territory with pride.
This is a great photo, but I have to wonder if it could be greater if parts of the photo there are not the ram were burned to make him stand out a bit more.
