Using a spoon is going to take a loooooonnnnngggg time to lay those bricks:-) Yup, you are doing it wrong. I think the picture would be better if you had better dynamic range in the B&W tones. The scene is mostly grey and lackluster with no strong highlights or shadows. Processing can help with that - don't just use straight greyscale because it generally doesn't yield strong shadows and highlights. Recommend trying Colorize Strength 0 Saturation 0 to start with. Then play with adjust shadows/midtones/highlights as well as curves and level adjustments.

The nails are an even bigger question for me, but maybe that is because I know nothing about masonry.
