The Macy's windows (formerly Marshall Fields) are a long standing Christmas tradition here in Chicago. You can always count on high production values and lots of animatronics. When I headed downtown with my camera I did not have a detailed plan of what I was going to shoot, but I knew I was going to stakeout these windows hoping for a good candid. When this young lady marched up I knew I had my opportunity if I did not screw it up. She was so cute standing up tall with her chest out and arms behind her back staring wide-eyed at the scene. I am happy this has gotten a good reaction.

My first top ten finish in a Free Study. Definitely helps take the sting out of the getting my first DQ today.

I would definitely take her home with me. A child with the stance of the true connoisseur.

A charming and captivating capture, so well processed. I love the crispness here - like the winter air. Congratulations on the top ten, Mark.

This is fabulous, Mark. How odd that both of us have experienced the same win/DQ/win cycle recently. Congrats on the tt in a FS!

I still think it's so weird it's not called Marshall Fields anymore. My friends and I would always go in there or the Carson Pirie Scotts between classes to waste some time once in a while. Kudos on the top 10 and thanks for the memories.

I remember our yearly trip to the city to see the Marshall Fields windows. It was a magical day, with a stop to look at the window displays, then dinner at The Berghoff, and then a show (usually A Christmas Carol or The Nutcracker). Great memories! Thanks for sharing.

I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.

Positives: This is a delightful image - great foreground and background offer loads of intensity. I really like the high contrast handling too. You lower POV (down to the girl's level) involves the viewer and creates a sense of being there. The reflections in the window are particularly compelling and offer a great sense of space.

Critical stuff: Nope

Overall: Standout composition and sweet subject without an ounce of schmaltz. Great stuff.

A nice gritty B&W and I like it the way that girl is standing there, examining the dsiplay.

Excellent shot. from the puffy jacket to the thin little legs, to the cold sun of winter.
