Friday nights in the fall bring high school football action to the community. Tonight's assignment for me was the Blue Devils of Maiden High School hosting the Tigers of Fred T. Foard High School. I am enjoying the opportunity to shoot from the sidelines as a "stringer" for my local newspaper... I'm no sports shooter. This is only my second real attempt at it. Hopefully I'll get better at it in time.

Post Processing Info:

I rotated the original image and then took a square crop to add some off-balance visual impact to the photo. I made some minor curve adjustments for color enhancement as well.

I agree. It is way out of my normal mode. It's been a good learning experience so far. I don't intend to pursue it seriously, but since I have the opportunity to learn it, I plan to get as much out of it as I can...

Thanks :)

Congrats on the greeny John! This is a rather untypical photo from you, I never thought you would delve into the world of sport photography!

Hello John, Did you ever determine if that 655 m subject distance comes from using a lens setting of infinity? Is it a Cannon lens & does it give you accurate readings at subject distance less than Infinity? Ref: Our comments on 'Gaia'

I thought this would ribbon, gave it at 10, nice shot John.
09/22/2004 04:23:55 AM
Well done, almost a ribbon this time!
09/22/2004 03:55:41 AM
Well done, Setz! Very close!!
09/22/2004 01:59:22 AM
Congrats Setz, your not so dead after all =). Well done with the tilted horizon, looks good in color. Background seems a bit noisy and there is a tiny bit of glare in his eye (hardly noticable, and basic editing). The emotion is really captured well in this sharp action packed photo. Way to go!
09/22/2004 12:46:18 AM
I knew this was yours! Nice job :)

This is a really nice photo. Friday night football sucks to shoot and this is lit very well, especially the darker skin. Looks like the stadium has nice lights!
09/21/2004 02:35:49 PM
A 10 because of the position of the hand ;)
09/20/2004 11:09:35 PM
I like the colors in this one and the look in the eyes, not crazy about the heavy black border, but a nice shot
09/20/2004 10:34:07 PM
The hues and angle here are excellent -- I just don't like the border.
09/20/2004 04:04:07 AM
the viewing agle give impact but does not work for me. Gives the impression of an uphill run
09/19/2004 10:26:38 PM
great colors, crisp shot -- well done!
09/19/2004 08:06:57 PM
i like the tilt. it helps create a sense of momentum. nice job.
09/19/2004 07:01:37 PM
Tilted horizon really makes this shot even more dynamic
09/19/2004 04:38:43 PM
Great colors! A little too much rotation though I think. I like the slope to indicate where he's going, but it's a bot too much.
09/18/2004 03:35:49 PM
Composition Good...Focus Great....one of the best in this Challenge that I have seen.....
09/18/2004 06:09:18 AM
this has all the makings of a great shot. just wish it wasn't tilted.
09/17/2004 04:31:25 PM
A really good photograph. I would like to see it straightened. Tilted photos are real diffilcult to view.
09/17/2004 12:49:51 PM
Cool. Two teams in blue and white uniforms so that you can get good color and contrast against the night sky. The way the shot was taken, with the ground sloping at a sharp angle to the right and the play in motion to that direction, is really effective. Nice focus and stop action on the center of the play. Nice visual balance between the bodies of the opposing players. Congratulations. Good luck in the challenge.
09/17/2004 10:59:02 AM
Nicely done! High school games are so hard to do because they typically have so little light. You seem to have pulled it off nicely here.
09/17/2004 04:59:50 AM
Beautiful. I love the colour and the angle. The composition enhances the energy of the scene. Good Luck.
P.S. What is he doing with his left hand? :)
09/17/2004 03:53:09 AM
good capture, I would have rotated to make the field level. It makes it look like they are playing on a hill. I like the vivid colors. Now I won't make too much of a fuss over placement of the running back's hand or the blocker's holding foul on the mask of his opponent. 6
09/16/2004 11:05:20 PM
I recognize the face mask violation, but what do they call the other one?? :-)
Nice shot, it's good to see the front of the action instead of chasing after it.
Nice and sharp too.
09/16/2004 08:13:36 PM
Above average score. Don't care for the tilt. Just my opinion, but it makes me dizzy. I do like how the (on the qb) how the head and body are in focus, while the feet and the legs are blurred, showing the motion.
09/16/2004 02:54:18 PM
Good picture.
09/16/2004 01:36:52 AM
Excellent capture... and the tilt of the frame really adds to the image. Love the color; great work here.
09/16/2004 12:09:07 AM
There's something about this picture that I really like yet I can't put my finger on it. Maybe it is the tilted horizon? I don't know but I like the shot. Good work and good luck in the challenge.
09/15/2004 11:02:37 PM
Could have been a great picture, but the slant makes it very disorienting. Unless you meant to do that.
09/15/2004 10:18:14 PM
Great action shot!! One of my favs of the challenge
09/15/2004 04:15:05 PM
I love the angle of the shot and the colors. Good job.
09/15/2004 12:16:47 PM
Like the angle. Lots to see, runner, blocker. Looks like holding on the offense with the facemask. Fits challenge well.
09/15/2004 12:08:49 PM
I don't usually go for the slanted horizon, but the expression on #2's face is fabulous, great capture.
09/15/2004 04:40:09 AM
good angle....
09/15/2004 03:29:50 AM
I like the tilt, it gives it more motion.
09/15/2004 02:50:46 AM
very nice
09/15/2004 02:01:23 AM
Great shot! Nothing beats Friday night high school football. You captured it all right down to the muscles on the players. Intresting angle as well. Good Luck!
09/15/2004 01:12:39 AM
Great capture, I like the tilt. (9)
