Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Masters' Free Study (Advanced Editing II*)
Camera: Nikon D100
Location: Seatown Dorset
Date: Sep 13, 2004
Galleries: Landscape, Seascapes
Date Uploaded: Sep 13, 2004

Took 3 days to get this shot. The first to case the place and find a suitable location, the 2nd to return and find out where the sun falls and how it lights the scene, and the 3rd was the shot. Overall I got extremely wet, but worthwhile and a very enjoyable time. I have loads of others which I will post after the voting.

Note: For some reason since I changed to Adobe RGB profile in camera and out, converting to sRGB seems fine but uploading it then seems extra saturated - I have spent an hour trying to find a happy medium but I haven't time to fix it.

great shot. love the slow shutter fx. on the subject of wierd changes in the photos after shoting in adobe rgb, i have the same problem every time i up load sany shot to the internet. even if I change it to srgb before. I've read everything I could about it and still cannot make my pictures look the same. wich was never a problem before. in my case the don't over saturate, the look very whashed out. if you find anything, let me know. congrats, again.

Ah, this is why I thought of Joe Cornish:
//www.joecornish.com/gallery/ne/1.htm
//www.joecornish.com/gallery/ne/3.htm
//www.joecornish.com/gallery/brit/5.htm
//www.joecornish.com/gallery/brit/6.htm
//www.joecornish.com/gallery/brit/8.htm

and this one reminds me of some of your Snowdon shots:
//www.joecornish.com/gallery/brit/2.htm

Have you looked at much of Cornish's work before? Curious as to what your influences are...

Beautiful color and composition. A little grainy at the bottom (either low light/high ISO or a bit oversharpened). One of the better landscapes in the group. (8)

Very classic seaside shot, would work well as a stock piece. Excellent timing with the long exposure to capture the fluid feeling of the waves, beautiful placement of the foreground rock to add a steadiness to the whole image, and stunning colors. 10

A beautiful photo, it even inspires for me the sounds & smell of the ocean. My ONLY nitpick, There seem to be places that appear slightly over sharpened, the larger rocks at the right upper 2/3's of the shore and the outline of the rocky bluff at the top right. All in all I like it very much -

absolutely stunning. the composition, coloring, and exposure all come together perfectly. thanks for a beautiful entry!

The cliff silhouette is so dramatic. The low speed effect softens the image too much. I think it would've been better without it - but it's of course my taste. Not necesarily the best taste :)

These colors are beautiful. Personally, I find the framing to be too heavy for this photo. It draws your eye away from the photo.

Excellent slow shutter photo to blur the motion of the water. Although it's an early morning shot, just feels a bit too red/orange for my tastes. Great photo nonetheless. 6

Great shot, sky and blurred sea give it a surreal effect. Wasn't gripped at first, but had to come back a couple more looks. Initial vote was a low 6, upped to 9 on third visit.

Strong points: Time of day (lighting) is perfect. Shutter speed is exactly right for the texture in the water. Composition could not be better, the s-curve of the waters's edge is wowzer.. Exposure is spot on. Suggestions for improvement. The only minor suggestion I have is to re-evaluate the need for such a large border.

10! This was the first image I checked out in the challenge, and this is just beautiful. You used the rule of thirds perfectly, and that (and the great, saturated color) is really what makes this stand out from the others. :)

This shot stood out straightaway in the thumbnails, and is just fantastic... wonderful composition, colours and PS work (or filters). Reminds me of a Joe Cornish (high praise). However, the quality lets this down a bit... it's been horribly oversharpened, look at the beach on the right below the cliffs... and there's artifacting everywhere. The edge of the cliffs shows bad haloing from sharpening. A huge shame. 8

10/03/2004 03:29:41 AM
Good use of shutter speed and the low perspective makes this more interesting.

10/03/2004 02:36:18 AM
Beautiful capture! The exposure is just right without going overboard. There is quite a bit of grainy chatter throughout. It's not offensive or dramatically taking away from the beauty here. If you are looking for a nit picky critique, I think it could be improved a bit by hiding the mottled grain. Aside from that... This is a beautiful image!

If this doesn't get a ribbon I'll be very surprised. One of my top picks.

P.S. I think you should have made it larger. You're allowed up to 640 pixels on the longest dimension. This is only 563 pixels including the border. Was it cropped from a larger image and you didn't want to resize it?

I really like your choice of shutterspeed. Your ability to capture the motion of the waves the way you have as well as maintaining the DOF is an indication of your skill as a photographer. Great job.

Whatever shutter speed you have used here is just perfect.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
10/01/2004 06:03:53 PM
Well, I love it. Simple as that. I feel the composition could have been improved only by a wider shot. 3rd favorite thing about the photo is the color on the big rock in the background. 2nd favorite thing is the slow shutter effect on the water. My favorite thing about this photo is the subtle salmon color reflections in the water.
I also think the foreground rock is perfect.

The long exposure and the colors work perfectly here. The low light levels, though, seem to have introduced some color noise in the water and in the reflections off of some of the rocks. The image also seems somewhat oversharpened.

I am a big fan of these kinds of shots and this one is great. I am a little thrown off by the rock at the bottom. As the photo opened I thought wow, then when the rock came up it somehow threw it off for me. Still it's a great shot! 7

The long exposure on the water is what makes this one. It must have been pretty dark for you to use the long exposure and still get that sky like that. Great job.

I like the movement in the sea and the warm sky. I don't like the border, either you added a border within the border or when you did unsharp mask it created a halo with the border. It just looks very jagged on the right side. Loose the border and you have a better picture (4).

I really like this one. Beautiful scene and perfectly blurred water. The pic has a fair bit of noise near the rock and looks as if you may have sharpened it after you added the border. Neatimage would be good. 9

Beautiful sunset/seascape photo! The colors are excellent and I like the way they reflect in the water. Compositionally, I really like how silky smooth water (from long exposure?) leads the eye in an S-shape from rock to rock and to the sunset. The large and dark land mass at the top of the pic gives it balance and stability. Excellent work! 10

Beautiful use of slow shutter speed to create a ghost effect with the motion of the water. Great colour and light. Strong composition. The rock in the foreground really helps anchor that. 8

Absolutely gorgeous, you early morning rise certainly paid off, it is hard isn't it ? Especially the blur of the flowing water, the glow from the sunrise on the water and the large stones breaking the water and giving a point to rest the eyes upon are perfect. The sunrise itself and the cliff finish the image off nicely but the front really creates the appeal for me.

Wow -- beautiful! This looks like one of those shots they'd use as a background for a scripture reading. Very peaceful... the long exposure made this a really slick shot. Kudos all around!

This is a beautiful landscape shot... The motion blur of the water adnn the compsotion remind me of something right out of Tony Sweet's "Fine Art Nature Photography" book. The colors are absolutely lovely. This image has nice 'layers' and the rock in the foreground anchors the composition very nicely. I don't think this image could be improved at all... great work :) = 10

Very nice, great colors and the long shutter gives the water a nice coating. Maybe a bit too much sharpening on the mountain, a slight halo gives it away.

One of the few times a photograph of a sunrise or sunset actually transported me there. Thank you!

Such fantastic and brilliant colors! The addition of the rock in the foreground really helps center the composition and the flow around it gives life. The run of the beach leads one up to the sunset, which is brilliant and well timed. Beautiful

Nice long exposure was a good choice for your silky ocean. The light is just fantastic! 9

Great capture, great colours. I'd really like to see the outakes and perhaps one in landscape orientation. 10
