Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Absurdity (Expert Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D Mark II
Lens: Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0L IS
Location: Lüneburg, Germany
Date: Feb 12, 2013
Galleries: Humorous, Travel
Date Uploaded: Feb 12, 2013

Almost everything is real here, only four images were used:
- cityscape; Lüneburg, of course, I live 20ft right from the willow tree in the background
- folded newspaper boat
- me
- foam under the boat from another watermill nearby

No filters or distortions involved except wave filter for the reflection of the boat and a pass of NikViveza on the final image.
Some details were cloned out from the background; the building behind the bridge is under construction and the scaffolding was too obvious. Also removed some road signs and a cyclist on the bridge.

I set great value upon making the subjects of my Expert Editing images not unreal (paper boats of that size are possible), but rather process them to an unreal look.

Hmmmm...rather absurdly bland. You should have a hat to match your boat! ;-)

P.S. if someone already said that, please address me as "Admiral"...;-P

You had to try regardless

Except I didn't. But nice try removing the major element from that sentence, which proves otherwise. That's better editing than the photo.

Perhaps. I don't make a habit of reading other's comments to formulate my own least of which comments from ribbon winning photos. The only reason I read jaysonmc's was because I saw your smug avatar in the comments. I'm glad that you now find it all obvious.

But the boat is the oomph of the image. Giving you a 6, but this is 10 material for the DPC crowd if you master those PS skills.

Thanks for your comment on my entry. However, I don't understand what your saying; does it mean the boat is too absurd or did I make a bad photoshop job?

I can't speak for jaysonmc but the main thing that jumps out at me as "fake" is the boat's impact on the water. There's no trailing wake left behind. Now granted it's not a speed boat but there should still be some residual disturbance left behind by the boat. "As is" it looks as if the boat was dropped straight down on to the water.

My favorite Oliver. Isn't too cold in Germany now to do stuff like that? ^_^

I love this one. I gave it a 9. Would have been a 10 if there had been waves/ripples following the boat and the stick as they would if this were real and making that much foam at the front.

A simple but brilliant idea. I love the colour cast that gives it an unreal story book feel.

This is marvelous. I think the heavy pp'g gives it a storybook quality which works well here. Just some very minor observations: the splashes created by the pole and the boat are a little too dense and look more like thick foam, and the halo around his head is a bit odd. I realize its a reflection in the water, but its placement is unfortunate. It could easily have been darkened just a bit.
