Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Sugar II (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D Mark III
Lens: Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0L IS
Location: Johannesburg, South Africa
Date: Mar 23, 2013
Aperture: f/11
ISO: 50
Shutter: 1/15
Date Uploaded: Mar 26, 2013

Lighting is two soft boxes either side of the set up and a flashlight underneath the camera pointing at the pouring sugar to give it some streaking. Flash on camera bounced off wall using rear curtain flash to trigger soft boxes at end of exposure.

Set up is:
Black backdrop
Black t-shirt on table with sugar poured onto it
2 DIY spoon stands made out of wood with slits cut in them and the spoons are held in place with a piece of wire so the spoons didn't slip through the slits / holes.
Also used my big 70-200 lens hood and put it on my 24-105 so that I didn't get lens flare from the soft boxes that were close by and almost in the frame.
Took me a while to find a jug that could pour the sugar in a fairly smooth motion. Also needed to get the right spoons with the right amount of "lip" to angle the falling sugar without too much splash.

Editing - tweak in ACR, import to PS, dodge and burn with luminosity masks, some cloning to get rid of stray grains of sugar, B&W layer from Nik SEP2, resize and sharpen, SFW

Nice cascade
The border is unnecessary and restrictive of the movement

I'm sure this will do very well in this challenge !!!
Trickling sugar is nothing new, but the use of two spoons is intriguing
