Challenge: Black on Black III (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-550D Rebel T2i
Lens: Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM
Location: Cambridgeshire
Date: Jul 30, 2013
Aperture: 3.5
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/125
Date Uploaded: Jul 30, 2013

Nautilus is Black Lusitano Stallion. The photo was of him in the doorway of his stable.
I very nearly entered the photo in colour but thought the Black and White would enhance the black more.
The colour Version is on my profile and Below in my comments.
Wishing I had entered that instead of the Black & White. (you live and learn)

That is quite amazing. I love how you have captured this.

Sorry to see this was DQ'ed. It happens (I've been DQ'ed). It doesn't change my opinion of this shot. It's a beauty.

You made the right choice with B&W. It's easily 1000x more powerful and striking than the color version.

Too bad for the DQ. This is one of those rules that has tripped up many people. Don't fret, if you are getting a ribbon on your second entry, more are soon to follow.

Maybe the background was darkened so it lost any details it had initially? It is probably no consolation, but an entry of mine was DQ'ed for a similar reason (and I can't claim being new around here).

What a pity, Sam. Don't be disheartened. Just about everyone around here has been DQ'd at some point. One of the hardest things to learn on DPC is the editing rules, and how far you can push the envelop on each before it's no longer "legal". Just remember that a DQ has nothing to do with the quality of the image, which in this case is splendid.

Well, well! Congrats on the ribbon, the PB, AND the PH bling! Not bad for your second entry :-)

Also, you can add your own notes under the photo by clicking on "edit the details of this image" link (which is at the bottom of the left box under the image), rather than next to the comments, below :-)

Lovely portrait, congrats on the ribbon! My only quibble (having been a professional horsewoman) is that the halter could have been done up a couple more notches so it doesn't look about to fall off his nose, but ah well :-)

Beautiful shot. I like the title because it somehow looks like a shell as much as a head.

I'm hanging this in my fantasy art gallery.

How can this not be a top score. tack sharp detail, interesting details, fabulous portrait without eye contact. Only nit picking I am going to do is the stall bars in the background. I have found that tilting the screen of your comp when finished with a black and black subject, it will show you any light area's. 9

I would have liked to have seen this in colour to see the sheen of the horses black coat.. but its still very nice in black and white. Nice shot.

I am going to assume the horse was black even though my guess is that it is brown. I like the image. Just hope it follows the challenge.

"Take a photo in which the background is black and the subject is predominately a black as well."
