I wanted to do a self-portrait in the style of Cindy Sherman who is famous for her self-portraits in disguise. She did a series on clowns with wild backgrounds, so my aim was to imitate that style. (I had done a similar exercise during a digital photography class last year).
Since I wasn't sure if I could just use the gradient in Photoshop for a background, I made my own background by photographing strips of colored paper, and then using the liquefy tool, as well as modifying the brightness and saturation.
Next a little clown make-up, messing up my hair, and coming up with a goofy hat. I tried a number of poses, but this one seemed to fit the background the best.
The coat was a charcoal grey suit coat. I took a photo of a plaid flannel shirt, and used a Photoshop technique I had learned to wrap the pattern over the coat. The tie was originally a shade of green but I changed it to red in Photoshop. A lot of cutting and pasting, dodging and burning, masking and levels, and I ended up with the final product. A lot of work, but a lot of fun.
I know from comments in the forums that many don't like expert editing competitions, but it can make for some interesting results and a great learning experience. |
