Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Negative Space VI (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D Mark III
Lens: Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM
Location: Hawaii
Date: Nov 10, 2013
Aperture: f/22
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/20 sec
Date Uploaded: Nov 10, 2013

In LR5:
Used Camera Calibration for landscape and Lens Correction to level the horizon and correspond to my 14mm lens. Used Graduated filter to darken the sky and Adjustments Brush to enhance the stump. Global Adjustments made with most of the basic sliders, followed by tinkering with the tone curve, HSL, and detail sliders.

In PScc:

Did a High Pass filter sharpening technique combined with a mask to minimize halos.

Used a NIK plug-in to make global sharpening with a mask to control halos.

Resized and saved as a jpeg.

the stump has interesting negative space. the rest is just drama.

What a wonderful, bizarrely headless, stump. I love the tones and dramatic sky, too.

Beautiful. Worthy of a high score in a free study.

No vote. I don't vote on challenges that I enter.

Details: Use the surrounding space of your subject to create the wow of the photograph.

Yeah, this is a good one. Fantastic moment here.

Processing is too contrasty for me, and I'd like it just a bit wider with more sky. (alternatively, just cloning out that small branch/rock at the bottom would have helped a great deal I suspect)

I really like this perspective and the subject. Can be something great. But I'm not a fan of how the processing shows too harsh of contrast and various halo effects.
