Wheeehee just outside the ribbon!

I want to thank everybody for voting go generous on my submission.
I especially want to thank the people that took the time to comment, I like all comments! There where some great comments that really helped me.

About this photo: It was taken almost accidentally. I just happened to be there with my brother in law who is visiting from Thailand.
I was just taking some crazy pictures and testing out my new Cockin filters when I saw the sun breaking true the clouds. I ran to get a reasonable good composition and had the time to take 2 photo’s handheld with my polarizer and sunset filter still on, before the light changed.

When I got home I selected the sky and upped the contrast in the lightness channel and it looked almost like this.
The halo that was commented about is from sharpening. Not that I did it on purpose, it was C1 that did it (still learning)

"A Magical Land"

I dream of a journey
to a magical land
where windmills dwell
as giants grand
I look beyond the grass
with astonished eyes
these giants are gentle
to my surprise
their blades were still
as though they slept
but spring to life
when the land is swept
swoosh, swoosh,
like a deep baritone
the blades come alive
as the wind is blown
the clouds stir
with a silent wake
they clear the way
for the sun to break
shining through
what a glorious light
amazing beauty
that thrills my sight
this is why I dream
for my mind to trace
and recall the scene
of the power and grace.
so each night I journey
to this magical land
to delight in the beauty
where the giants stand.

Jeff Sasek

Hope you like it Peter.

I love it. Maybe the grass is a little to green compared to the other colors. But very well executed.

Hey there!
This is ericlimon from the Critique Club!

I just had to get this image huh?

As I commented before "It does looked heavily processed, but so what? do people really think Ansel Adams wasn't called the master of the darkroom for nothing? he worked his photos so much in the darkroom, that the originals are barely reconizable. He wrote the book (literally) on post processing."

I think this image is terrific, and don't have much critique for you. maybe a little less sharpening, and when you selected the sky, next time a small (1 pixle) feather will help to lessen the harsh lines around the straight edges.
That it.
It's a great shot, and I love it!

Eric

Very interesting play on light... the leaves in the foreground, for me, are just a little distracting (maybe if they were less highlighted it wouldn't matter). The rest, however, is gorgeous! Good luck in the challenge!

the sky looks very unnatural. The light on the mills and grass looks very different from the sky.

Very lovely! I love the colors and the light coming through the clouds really makes for a nice pic. Focus and clarity are excellent and lighting is what really makes this photo. Love the weeds in the forground as well. Guess I have nothing to complain about here. 10. ~Heather~

Blatantly edited beyond necessity this has become digital art, which is unfortunate because it looks like a lovely scene. I wonder why it needed to be pushes so far? While the voters here go for the over-processed stuff some of the time, I think I'd have forsaken the quest for votes in favour of making this more appropriately 'special'.

Great compo and subject.

Returning for comments.
A charming study whose perfection exists in its natural tones. as is it looks like an image with a backdrop. However, do not let this observation become so important because the image is still lovely to look at and many will love it. Bumping up.

I'm having a hard time figuring this photo out. The sky almost looks like it was selectively duotoned, but the grass looks so very green that it makes it look like two different photos layered together. The windmills and grasses appear oversharpened. I love the look of the sky, with the beautiful sun rays coming down, and I love the windmills, but the photo just doesn't look cohesive to me.

11/03/2004 03:42:43 PM
I love the sky and the sun rays. I don't think the bushes in the foreground add anything to the photo but are more a distraction. The windmills are wonderful :)

11/03/2004 01:51:43 PM
interesting shot. looks like you oversharpened a bit though, as I can see halos.

11/03/2004 12:57:18 PM
This is a stunning image. The only reason I didn't score it higher is because it looks over-processed. It looks like there was so much USM used that white edges appeared around the mills, giving them a more ghostly effect. The effect in itself is cool, but the overall image gives the impression of animation, which, I feel, detracts in this case. (7)

I like the composition and dark brownish mood with the light falling into it.

On the editing technical side I feel that the photo is oversharpened. There is a clear bright halo around all sharp edges (the outline of the mills themselves and the threes), usually caused by to much unsharp mask. The result of this is also that it almost looks like the background does not belong to the foreground.

11/01/2004 03:47:10 PM
I like the picture but don't care for the "halo" effect
