Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Free Study 2013-11 (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Nikon D800
Lens: Sigma 35mm f1.4 DG HSM for Nikon
Location: Village in East India
Date: Nov 18, 2013
Aperture: 1.4
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/60
Date Uploaded: Nov 25, 2013

I have had the privilege of travelling quite a bit this year to film and photograph - Malawi, Mozambique, Vietnam, Bali, India. This is definitely one of my favourites, and to win a blue in a Free Study is a huge honour, so thanks for the votes.

I took around 12 -15 images of this beautiful, gracious lady in a very, very remote and poor village in East India. I then sat next to her with my D800 and enjoyed the way she looked at her images on my LCD. It was a real highlight for me. I don't think she has seen her picture like this before.

I did very little editing to this. Basically a b and w conversion, and a little sharpening. The D800 with the exceptional Sigma 35mm f1.4 did all the work.

Here are the colour variations:

I would. It's my style of photography though.
The other ribbon winners on the front page right now wouldn't have a chance of making it on my wall though. I've always loved uncontrived portraiture of interesting people.

Sorry hotpasta, thought I would respond here since I can't in the forums.

i like that oh btw i gave this a 7

Oh, and regarding my initial comment about the photograph having a bit of a Leica feel to it, i've been looking at a lot of portraits by Alfred Weidinger recently who does remarkable things with a Leica and the 50mm 0.95 (and 75mm) and your portrait reminded me a bit of them. Check him out, i'm sure you'll enjoy them.

Wow! Amazing textures, great b&w, and such a wonderful model. Definitely my top 5 so far. I could easily see that end up in National Geographic. 10

This is just stunning. In every sense of the word. 11, well, 10 then. There is a technical thing to this though, of course. I'm quite interested in the geeky technical stuff. This looks kind of like it is shot with a Leica and one of those fast 50mm lenses. It had that feel. I'm curious as to what you've shot it with. Anyway, tech stuff apart - it's a lovely human portrait at the end of the day. Nothing else needed.
