i noticed after posting it to the web that it apears just a tad too sharp and i think that may have been to the way i saved it .. but if I had done it properly it would have apeared about 1 - 2 stops darker

wonderful capture composition everything except that the thing with digital cameras it they seem to make everything too bland and not enough contrast between light and dark and thats just not how we see the animal

here is my edited version of your picture All copyright rights are still yours. I just wanted to show you the wonders of two tools in photoshop
LEVELS and COLOR BALANCE

ALL I DID WAS moved the levels from left to right alittle and from the right to left then adjusted the midtones to be a tad bit brighter .. i dont know what you were going for as far as mood but if you use the middle bar in levels that will allow you greater creative control

then i got rid of some color casting from the foggy dim light and tinted it more to the warm tones cyan to red blue to yellow and green to magenta slightly
then i saved for web and wrote this email total elapsed time 5 mins

Congratulations, in South Africa we call this deer an Impala. Great shot. Glad to see you shot it with a Canon and not a gun.

This is my favorite in the challenge. I love the foggy background and the clearness of the deer. I love his expression too. Looks like hes about to speak :) 10

the lighting is a little flat, so a bit of push in the contrast post-processing could compensate. very well executed; nice crop, nice choice of shallow depth. good attention to detail.

Gorgeous, stunning capture of an impala in what appears to be a pristine environment!

Sharpness, chosen depth of field, contrast, brightness - all are perfectly synced. There are no distractions. Whatever grass, shrubs and branches are there, are there, convincingly and credibly. Colours and tones are marvelously subdued, suggestive of dawn. The framing/composition by thirds, too, is simple and ample, well suited for the subject.

The impala's poised posture, the clear eye-contact, the sweep of the ringed antlers sculpt an instant, preciously charged with a tangible heartbeat -wild! And there are neither fences nor oil wells cluttering our attention!

This, IMHO, is an inspiring photograph, which goes beyond mere show and tell. It speaks to me simply and naturally of the thrill and the fragility of life. > 10

Great capture. Looks like a little more contrast might make this stand out, it may be natural this way, but it does seem a little "gray". Still, this is one of my top picks for this challenge.

Although this may be lacking some contrast, the overall composition and sharpness of this image are real good. Possibly stronger as a portrait instead of landscape crop. Good work. -danny

Very nice image.. Worth of Nat'l Geographic, but not steriotyped. I love the open mouth and the off center framing. Good work and good luck!

Some might complain about the subdued color of this. Personally I really like it. It makes this have a painterly feeling. Beautiful animal too.
10/04/2004 08:57:22 PM
A superb photograph! Love the tone, dof, cropping.
10/04/2004 05:19:15 PM
Wow. This is in my top5 so far, I love the composition, and you caught it while looking at you makes it even more interesting. Great background, personally I would have bumbed up the contrast a bit. 10 Good luck getting that bluey ;-)

First i thought nothing special but it is special. It looks so real...fantastic focus specially on that gray misty background. And colors are lovely too.

I like this image very much...something about the twilight looking lighting and the razor sharp focus. I also really like the composition. In my eye a very classicly good wildlife photo...like something I would expect to see in a National Geographic magazine. =) Congrats!

This is a really great capture. I think this shot would look much better with more contrast, so I hope you tweak curves or contrast after the challenge. But the original photo is really nice - good job.

Very well taken. Great composition. The color just doesn't pop, which works well for this photo, but I predict it will fall a little in ranking since many of the other shots have bold color. 9 from me.
