I have seriously been waiting for this shot for 2 months. That is when I first discovered the window in my garage condensates, and then freezes. Lately, I got some OK shots, but not great.
Then I thought of something. I should wait for the past ice to melt off, and the droplets to re-freeze. Just so happened that this cycle took place on Thursday. The sun came out during the day, to warm the glass, melt the ice, and leave dozen of droplets clinging to the glass. A few hours later, after the sun set and the temperatures dipped into the negatives (-2F to be exact), I stepped into the garage to take a look.
WOW!
All of the droplets were in the process of freezing out from the center, in a multiple of different patterns. From the straight radial, to the seemingly random, to even fractals! I took various shots with the flash attached, and bouncing off a piece of insulation board (one side is shiny). Since it's dark out, that allows the non-ice spots to fall black and increases the contrast.
A little blue addition in post to give it more life (the black and white, while neat looking, didn't have the same pop). And here you go.
I hope the voters see the intense transition that I see.
FYI, to focus well here, I used a tip I figured out recently with some other macro shots. Auto focus is ok, but inaccurate from lens movements and such. So I switch to live view, zoom in, and manually focus. Then I can let go of the camera, let it wiggle to a rest, and make sure the focus is spot on.
