So, I got this idea in my head and figured all I needed was my daughter and my wife's creepy childhood doll from the basement. I knew my daughter
got off work at 8pm that evening (lifeguard at the community pool) and I knew it would be my only opportunity to shoot her -- so I waited for her. When she blew through the door I asked if she could help me with a picture. She said, "Sorry -- I'm just home to change clothes, a friend is picking me up in 15 minutes." With school about to start up again she was working to squeeze every minute out of a waning summer. I said desperately, "I only need five minutes -- go change clothes."

I crammed her into my studio with the funky background (aka, the powder room / first floor bathroom), and took a few quick shots before she was back out the door. It was only afterward I noticed the fading henna tattoo on one hand and one off color fingernail on the other. Teenagers. Oh, well.

This might have been interesting in color but I couldn't figure out how to get the doll/human skin tones to match. I suspect it's not hard if you know your way around PS better. I wrestled a bit with whether to enter a version with my daughter's eyes or the doll's eyes. The family voted for my daughter's eyes -- they thought it was creepier. Here's the passed over version:

I also seriously considered entering something in a completely different direction -- a composite I toyed with from of one of the quick shots of my daughter that night, a morning street shot, and a shot in a community garden for texture.

Crazy realistic. I love the concept and the lighting. It's hard to stop looking because I just can't get over that the head isn't real.

Nice and creepy just the way I like it. Works well in my mind. Top ten at least.

Very impressive concept. Not sure how fond I am of the background though... Also, this image would be more effective if larger because its strength is in the details; cropping to portrait could have done some enlargement...
Still an 8 from me.
