On approach to JFK on a recent trip to NY. The "war zone" in the foreground is in the borough of Queens.
I always travel by the window now, because I love shooting out of it. Passes the time, and occasionally, I get lucky. This time, I was a bit peeved because I was apparently sitting on the wrong side of the plane to get this shot. I wasn't too worried because the air was rather hazy, so the city would likely not be too visible. Then the sun started doing this, and as we got lower, the atmosphere started to clear. I became terribly anxious because this would be one of those once-in-a-lifetime shots of the city, backlit with a golden sunset. And I was on the wrong side of the plane on a full flight.
At the very last moment, the plane turned into its final approach and I ended up on the correct side. And there was the city. Right behind the wing!!!
I decided to just keep focusing on it, hoping that the plane would tip slightly to reveal the city, and that in doing so, I would get a clear shot, without fuselage fumes, motion blur, etc. Lady luck favored me a couple of times, and I was able to capture a few shots before we were too low.
I decided to bring out the detail in the foreground, as it makes this more Oz-like, with the golden city above it all in the distance.

Incredible place, right? And you captured it so splendidly here. This is one of the most amazing views of my golden Big Apple and I particularly like the foreground here. As a staunch Manhattanite I thank you for this image!
Something about this image really gets me. IQ not there, exposure suits the theme as well as lighting... But I think its because of how the emormity and vastness in size and what it represents... Can be portrayed so simple. Almost like takinga pic of the Milky way and look at it... So small , understanding but never grasping truly how great a number of stars and distance it represents.
Millions of peoples lives shrunk in one frame representing a life, a family, a room, a building, a penny... A billion Dollars. Not an image that scores well on DPC but it is one that speaks to me. Thanks for posting in FS
