Yes, these are just drops of oil and vinegar in a glass of water... ;-) The photo came out of the camera almost as you can see it.

I used Lightroom to rotate, crop, remove some dust particles, add contrast, some darkness and some clarity.
Regarding the equipment I used for the photo, I wanted to get the maximum possible magnification, so I used my Canon EOS-500D + Canon EF 100mm Macro + 2 x Canon EF 25 extension tubes at it's minimum focus distance. So this means that what you see on the photo is no longer than 1 cm (0,4 inch).

The camera was just perpendicular to the surface of the glass of water, this is the reason all the bubbles are in focus. There is a sense of depth due to the different size on the bubbles, but they are all on the surface of the water.

Regarding lighting, I used two speedlites, one on each side of the glass. One of them was lighting the bottom of the glass, and the other the top. I added some gels to the speedlites, as my first idea was to get some nice colors on the bubbles, but it didn't work.

Finally, the most important effect on the photo: the white and black lines on some of the bubbles. I took around 100 different photos. At the beginning I tried to make them in just the middle of the glass of water. There all the photos looked very nice, but the bubbles seemed just bubbles!. Suddenly I realized that in the edge of the glass some very nice effect appeared. The rounded edge of the glass created this black and white lines on the bubbles which were giving them some cosmic appearance. There is not any stripped object around ;-)

Thank you so much for your kind comments, they are much appreciated

try putting either bright fabric or scrap paper (craft printed paper) under the glass...the colors get real interesting. Excellent

I was certain this would win. Until I saw the ferous fluid. Those shots ALWAYS win :)

But I was right, this did finish almost at the top. Really terrific shot.

Likely blue. Very, very cool. Clearly oil or some such thing, but the Jovian stripes take this to the next galaxy

Very cool drops shot - excellent focus and clarity and I love the look of the edge of space and the black hole or something. Definitely cosmic for me.
