Hey DPC! I am back! First image in...? Well a long time! Let's see how it goes.

I had been receiving alerts for the aurora all week when this was taken and every night my friends went out and took fantastic images of the northern lights. When I got the alert for this night, the data didn't look great but there was potential there so I drove out to Vermilion Lakes to see if the "show" was on. Initially there was nothing but the sky was quite clear and with no moon the stars were quite nice.

As I shot I started to notice a green tinge forming over Mount Rundle. I have to admin I was grinning ear to ear when the tinge turned into this beautiful emerald over the town of Banff and Mount Rundle.

It was definitely a night to remember.

------------------------------------------
Most of the editing was adjusting exposure and doing some dodging on the rocks. I had light painted them so they were already fairly well lit but I bumped up the brightness on them a bit. Because I was shooting at a fairly high ISO I also had to do some noise reduction on the image.

Hello from the Critique club

An appealing image that meets the challenge

The Northern lights are a spectacular event to witness and especially to photograph and there have been a lot of amazing examples on DPC over the years. Your image whilst it might not be the most impressive in terms of the aurora itself is nonetheless very pleasing because you have made the effort to compose it using a landscape that would stand on its own merits alone. The foregrounds are often very tricky in this situation but I think you have handed it quite well with sufficient detail to enhance the landscape. The sky and clouds are a spectacular addition but they do dominate the aurora to a somewhat minor entity so reducing its impact a little.

A great image in a tough challenge, thanks for your entry

Looks like you used some light painting for the foreground. That was the perfect idea to add extra depth to the photo.

Exceptionally clear and sharply focused. Love the layers.
