used a garlic grating utensil and moved it diagonally across lens with 1 sec exposure. The rest was light burn and dodge and clone to help definition because the shadows suffer or get partially sliced, the defraction simply aids the light source and you are able to capture the rings of glow in a candle or low wattage bulb. The background was selected and used levels to darken. No filters of any kind.

Now, as you may note, I consider only the candle glow as impressionsistic, but then it is a picture of a candle.

Wow! A garlic grater- that REEKS! er... rocks. Congrats on your top 5 with this incredibly inventive technique. It really does look like an oil painting (though perhaps more 'old master' than impressionist). ;-)

I had you in Ribbon territory. Missed it by .014. Wonderfully executed and original. I'll be keeping a garlic grating utensil in my camera bag from now on!

Late to the party again. Thank you so much for sharing how you did this. While this wasn't my pick for the top, I had hoped it would get one of the other two spots. If you wouldn't mind, did you use other lighting sources? I love the scratchy look of this.

Congratulations Dan. Would have liked to to see it placed higher. Exceptional job nonetheless. I should try you technique sometime.

Congratulations on placing 5th, although I really thought this would be in the top 3. Very clever idea to move something in front of the lens to achieve the painterly effect. One of my two favorites in this challenge.

Dan:

This should have ribboned! I have great great respect for the ribbon winners but this should have been there!

Congrats on a fine showing

Congratulations on your 5th place - I have a question: what do you mean, "grating utensil and moved it diagonally across lens ..."? What kind of grating utensil (are you talking about something like a cheese grater?) I liked this picture very much, it was one of my favourites, and I've been quite curious how it was made.

This is representative of what I think of when I think of impressionist paintings. I bumped this up to 10 earlier in the week and forgot to leave a comment. Thanks for sharing this.

A terrific example of impressionism- one of my top 5. The streaks of light above the candle make it obvious that this is no mere PS effect. Looks like something placed on or in front of the lens to create a realistic, painterly look. I'll be interested to see how it was done. Good job! 9

Great composition, I like the inclusion of the candle. The colors are nice, I like how you managed to make it look like a painting. Good luck...

Invitational Challenge Level: Experienced

Challenge link: medium, but more digital in its appearance than photographic. While I like the effect, it is an emulation of a painting style than a photographic representation of the subject through impressionistic technique (composition and subject).

Image critique: a good exposure and nice lighting, but difficult to assess since much of the integrity has been losty through the filtered effects and it seems that, to a large extent, you've missed the point here.

Out-of-challenge appeal: it's a sumptous, Christmasy vibe, but there's not much interest for me to revisit frequently.

Score: 6

I'm thinking multiple layers of saran wrap here, with vaseline maybe smudged on it as well. Whatever the technique, this one was the last (or first as you wish to look at it) one that I let convince me into giving a ten. To take a picture that I can already see without abstracting it would have been beautiful, but to be able then to translate that great shot into a faux painting...very nice :-)

This looks like one of the older painting you see. Like it was done hundreds of years ago. Maybe would have bumped that candle light down some.

My Favourite in this challenge....10!
You've created the impressionistic feel in this photo (you obviously studied some impressionistic paintings to understand the effect) . This one better ribbon.
AND...I gotta know how you did this. Was it through a textured glass?

I like this image right up the right hand edge... where it gets all sharp in a way that it just shouldn't. It's visually disturbing. If far right hand quarter were removed I'd rank it a 9 or 10, but its so jarring with it being there I can only do it an 8.

Very nice result here, I love the halo around the candle light. The textures here are gorgeous, especially the apples. Superb composition. I'm looking forward to seeing how you achieved this, I hope it wasn't by using PS filters! 10
