Kind of ironic to submit an almost entirely unedited photo into an extended editing challenge, but that's just what I've got this half of the month, so that's what's going in.

A shot intended to capture the fundamentally tarnished-gold colour scheme of the model's faintly red hair and pale skin by blending it with similar earthy background colours, in a negative-space balanced composition that focuses on her slightly confrontational but ultimately neutral gaze.

Shot with a single umbrella above and to the right of the model, in a room with a wooden floor which adds a warm fill light. The background is a cream painted door a good distance away. The muted tones come out quite cinematic - only a little tone curve adjustment required. The Helios 85mm f/1.5 allows the background to just melt away. The focusing screen isn't precise enough to focus accurately at f/1.5, but live view allowed me to focus on the eyes despite having only a couple of millimetres depth of field.

Editing: tone curve adjustment, resize, sharpen. No crop, nothing.

Hello from the Critique club

An appealing image that meets the challenge

A lovely portrait of a lovely model. The lighting is very effective with a lovely contrast between light and shade that gives a lovely modelling to her face. However, that very shallow DOF is not quite working perhaps as well as it could. The dominant eye is her left but it feels ever so slightly softer than her right eye which is in the shade and therefore less dominant though sharper. I love both the colour, shape and varied textures of her lovely hair it looks lovely. Her gaze is, as you say, both forceful yet somewhat neutral at the same time, very enigmatic.

Thanks for your submission
