 I wanted to keep this clearly photographic rather than mimic a physical medium.

I started with an overall concept and went from there - I knew I wanted water, earth and a sky 'layers' - I wanted to keep/show the joins but I modified them a little too with the liquefy tool.

I used the double exposure and multi-lens tools in Analogue Efex on the final version and I think these help to add a bit more richness to the image. Seven source images.
