We have two families of Downy Woodpeckers that have two young ones each, one male, one female. They've become quite fond of the suet cake we have hanging on the edge of the deck, and have gotten quite used to interacting with us. If I'm standing near the rail a young one will fly up, land 2 feet away from me and just stare until I move and it can get to the cage. Watching them from this close is a blast.

Would it make you feel better or worse if I told you that both this and the hummingbird were taken from within 3 feet of each other while either standing or sitting on my deck? With this one I was sitting with a cigar and, IIRC, a bourbon. :)

Sometimes you go to nature, some times it comes to you.

Lots of good stuff happening here, from the perfectly placed bokeh to the the tiny catchlight and crisp focus/detail. Congrats!

Feed the big baby. These immature birds always seem so silly begging to be fed. Good shot.

Think this will be the winner... clear and tells the story of the moment before... nicely caught!
