The wife and I flew to Victoria BC and rented a car and drove up to a little place named Telegraph Cove where we met some people who took us for a 20 minute water taxi ride to an island named Compton Island. On this island is a company called Orca Dreams and they operate a luxury camping all inclusive whale/wildlife watching company. We spent 3 days and 3 nights there and had a wonderful time. Saw some whales, orca and humpback, seals, eagles, caught some fish, and basically relaxed for 3 days. They have "rustic" touches all over camp. There was a hot shower, open to the wilderness, and a full kitchen and real beds inside safari tents that are mounted on permanent wooden structures about 3 feet off the ground. My wife went kayaking 3 times and I went one time, sea kayaks that are about 18 feet long. We have a lake kayak we take camping with us here in Colorado, but the sea kayaks are a little different, but not much.
It's tough trying to get any good shots of whales while you are in a boat moving all over the place. Almost as hard as shooting humming birds. So didn't really get the shots I was hoping for of the whales.
This shot is from the cove where the camp is set up. The tides changed about every 6 hours with a water depth change of about 10 feet or so. That tide change caused strong currents all over the place. One time the water would be moving one way, and 6 or 8 hours later, it would moving the other way! This shot is at low tide, all the rocks are covered during high tide. Got really lucky with a nice colorful sunset one night. A really magical place. |
