Challenge: If I Were an Animal (Extended Editing)

It is very cold today. Everything is white around me. At first, I thought I was completely alone. But after a few seconds, I started to spot companions: a squirrel running on a tree, a bird desperately scratching the floor for food, a fox crossing a path in the distance. In some way, I feel like those critters and I are closer than usual to each other, due to the coldness: the air is biting our skins, there is a sense of emergency, we have to fight a common enemy. Of course, there is a great difference between them and me: I have access to clothes, to a warm house, to unlimited food. I see them, and I feel like I am cheating, like I am living in a way I was not designed for.
What would happen if other animals had access to technology too? Would they feel better? Would they enjoy their life better? When you bring comfort, what do you remove? I started thinking about this, and imagined how would a spider look, if it was slowly becoming a human, metaphorically speaking. Why hunt if food is easy to obtain? From there, why produce a web at all? Is a spider without its web still a spider? Would it become a new species, behaving completely differently than its ancestors? Is losing wilderness a bad thing at all? Should I care? So many questions. Time for a hot coffee.

| Superb creation. My only quibble with this photo is that it does not look like an "animal" - at least any animal I've ever known about. It seems to be more alien than animal. The creativity and execution are marvelous, though. |
