I was very happy to discover my owls returning to their traditional nesting area. Mating season is probably over. Eggs could be laid soon. Incubation period is 37 days. Nesting period is usually 45 days. If our owls follow the "game plan", owlets could fledge in late May, or early June. This is the first time I've used my new lens and camera on a large nocturnal raptor. I'm delighted to see the results. Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, Canon EF400mm f/4 DO IS II USM +1.4xIII. 1/200s@f/5.6, ISO 400, lens focal length 560mm. 02/15/17 9:24am. Larimer County, Colorado.

Thanks to the Estes Park News for publishing my Great Horned Owl photo on the front page of the February 24, 2017 edition.

I hear owls very close to my house, how did you find this beautiful creature. I don't know if he or she travels further south for the winter but I've heard it very close to my house. I saw one in a tree next to my house a couple of years ago but not since then. I think it was a Barred owl. What is the one in your photo? Oh and BTW our sky's are very blue here in the Ouachita Mountain range. I love the blue sky's.
Very nice shot, I'm jealous. :)

I'm delighted to read that this was a natural capture (I know pretty much most of your shots are - but didn't know who the photog was until after results). Frankly, I'm a bit jealous. Would LOVE to be able to find, let alone get close enough, to capture a decent owl photo. It's on my bucket list.

My sky is quite blue. I'm sorry you do not live in a place with a blue sky. In your area, it's likely air pollution or humidity causing dispersion of light rays. Maybe you should travel more.
