 A bear cub will climb an aspen, if threatened by danger. Usually, only humans and mountain lions are a risk to black bears. The momma bear will teach cubs to climb a "right-sized" aspen trunk upon receiving an audible danger call. The momma bear can defend herself and her cubs if they are high in the tree. West Horseshoe Park, RMNP.
