CRITIQUE CLUB CRITIQUE
by karmat

Oh, wow. Not a lot I can say to improve this one. A very nicely done shot.

COMPOSITION
I think the fact that the horizon is not on a third works okay here. The trees extend upwards past the horizon, and it is not so noticeable. It still has a very balanced, and stable feeling to it. The trees really serve well to capture the eyes and pull them up into the frame. Especially effective is the row on the left side. Also the "humps" of snow add interest and give the picture some motion.

TECHNIQUE
Beautiful focus and I really like the simplicity of colors. You are commended especially on getting the snow to look white. If I could change anything about this shot, I would like to see it with more blue in the sky. Obviously, you are not God, so you didn't have any control of that, but if you could use photoshop and add some more blue there (for reasons other than dpc), this shot would be near perfect in my opinion.

OVERALL EFFECT
Again, this shot is wonderful, and is so peaceful and serene. I bet the rest of the scenary was equally as beautiful. Sorry I can't add anything to make it better. You have an awesome shot here!

Thanks everyone. This is really cool that I finally won a ribbon :). I took this shot over at Mission Ridge, by Wenatchee, Washington. I was up skiing and it was a nice day, sun shining and everything. I waited until it was a bit in the afternoon and the sun was over to the side, and I started shooting photos here and there. I was skiing down and I came across some trees with the sun shining through, so I climed up through them and up a ways to this. "Wow." I started shooting. I tried shooting with the horizon not centered, but the trees didnt follow the rule of thirds and it just looked strange, so I chose this shot, where I tried to fit the trees in equal portions of the frame. I overexposed it +0.7 on the meter and then used the levels in Photoshop to tone it down a bit/ increase contrast. I set the apeture as small as it could go (8) and focused about 20m away, so that everything would pretty much be in focus. Set the speed to 500. I was about waist deep in snow when I took this :-p. One thing I probably should have done was to crop out the tree on the far right that is just barely in the frame, but I guess it isn't too distracting. I had just enough time to get it in and photoshop it; I submitted this about 10 minutes before the cutoff time :).

Very beautiful shot - I'm sure you are quite proud of it. Snow is very difficult to capture, and the color and texture is perfect here. Congratulations on your 2nd place win.

What a wonderful shot. I had forgotten how beautiful snow could be (been sick and tired of snow lately -- got about 3 feet on the ground, yuck). Congrats of the ribbon. Definitely one of my favourites this week.

Cenetered horizon will bother some but I think it's OK here. Really fine exposure capturing the snow and clouds both..

Technically pretty good. Snow is tough to shoot. The shot could benefit from a more prominent subject.

Winter wonderland. It sort of has a dreamlike quality to it. Snow is tough to expose properly. Nice job. The horizon is a bit too centered vertically maybe. 9

This almost looks like a cartoon, such a Rodolph or any of the Christmas cartoons. The white snow has a blue tint to it, which I feel is the reason for the title. The sky peaking through the clouds is a beautiful blue. This is a beautiful snow scene, whether it is real or not. It's beautiful and well done.

You've gotten an excellent image here. You must have been on snowshoes to get it, though. The light and shadow are excellent and you've captured a very nice image here.

I am expecting to see the Norelco Santa appearing over the hill. Actually this is an incredible photograph. The lighting caused by the low sun really accentuates the hills and valleys of the snow drifts and CONGRATULATIONS on the beautiful texture of the snow!! I hope you are going to share your technique with the rest of us. It's so perfect it doesn't look real. Truly amazing. 10!!

Beautiful photo, very relaxing and contemplative. THe DOF and lighting are perfect in my opinion. I would crop slightly differently to rermove the small dark tree on the left and the cut off tree on the right. Wonderful shot, one of 4 of my 10's this week.
