This cow is the matriarch of the moose family. In many respects, she decides where and when the rest of the clan go and what they do. I didn't want to neglect her, so here is a photo showing how alert and focused she is. She has a balancing act between managing her offspring and the bull. Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, Canon EF400mm f/4 DO IS II USM, 1/640s@f/4.0, ISO 1600, lens focal length 400mm. 09/29/17 4:39pm.

The shiras subspecies (Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho) are serial monogamists. The gigas subspecies in Alaska and the andersoni and americana subspecies in Canada/Maine collect small harems. Where I live, I've only seen one bull with one cow. There have been challenger males in the vicinity, but no harem. This could also be a function of the relatively small population east of the continental divide.

This is an A. a. shirasi moose. The NE US has a different subspecies, A. a. americana.

A splendid entry, Richard. Love that the water drops seem as frozen as her alert stare.
