Challenge: Extended Free Study 2017-12 (Extended Editing)
Collection: Challenge Stuff
Camera: Olympus OM-D E-M1
Lens: Olympus 300mm f/4.0 IS PRO M.Zuiko Digital ED
Location: Horsepen Bayou, Texas, USA
Date: Jan 13, 2018
Aperture: 5.6
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/1000
Date Uploaded: Jan 14, 2018

This was taken with the 1.4x TC, giving me an effective 840mm of reach. Photograph was taken handheld from my kayak and I used flash with a Better Beamer attached. First time I have used flash for wildlife photography in a long time.

Not sure how this will do and don't think it will beat my 10th place from last time, but you never know. I really like the photograph, just wish his head was parallel with the camera.

There is also no crop on this photograph. I was 14 feet away and there is only .6 inches DoF in the photo. Need to remember to stop down, especially if using flash since I don't need as high a shutter speed to freeze the action.

Hello from the critique club

An appealing image that contributes well to the open challenge

Ooh you little tinker, you threw me there, I thought whose this Phocal, it looks like serious competition to Ronnie…! Who else could it be, it has all your hallmarks of a quality image except as you have already identified for yourself all of which I agree with, sharpness in the beak and prey that would have resulted from a smaller aperture would have made this a winner.

The bird is so wonderfully sharp... that when I get to his/her catch and it's blurry, I feel disappointed. Since this is an extended editing challenge, I'd have "made up" a sharper catch.

Still a fabulous image.
