A Tricolored Heron (Egretta Tricolor) catches a small minnow on the waters of Horsepen Bayou, Texas, USA.

Photograph taken handheld holding the camera over the side of my Ascend H12 kayak while using a Godox V860iiO w/ a Better Beamer flash extender. I used the LCD screen flipped out to frame and capture the image, which wasn't easy with an effective 600mm lens. The flash made it a lot more bulky compared to holding just the camera/lens over the side, which I have done many times in the past. This was my first time using the flash, so was a new experience.

This photograph only has a 400px crop from leveling and was shot from a distance of 18 feet with a DoF of 1.0 inches.

I just ordered a 30x20 print of this photograph on metallic paper from Mpix Pro and can't wait for it to arrive. It arrived and it looks amazing..............

Thanks everyone for all the comments and votes, really appreciate it.

Sidpixel. I wish it was bigger but can’t get everything. In the print it is really easy to see the catch.

For those wondering, the print does look absolutely amazing. Waiting to get my 40x30 of another shot of this bird from getting framed. Can’t wait to hang both of them in my office.

Hello from the critique club

An appealing image that contributes to the open challenge well

Well done Ronnie, your edging ever closer to that top spot in the Free Study! And what a well deserved placing, an excellent action shot. It's perhaps a shame the fish is so small but it can be seen. I think your use of the flash has worked very well enabling you get good sharp action freezing, I wait with baited breath to see what further delights await us…!
