I was in Nashville to take photos as a favor to my mother, who happens to have a striking black & white dog. Less than 90 minutes to go before my return flight. Hmmm... quick trip to the fabric store for a yard of zebra print material and viola!

I placed a single strobe light with a reflector umbrella just to my left and got a little natural sunlight from a large window on the right. Waving a piece of beef jerky around the lens will get a dog's UNDIVIDED attention. Very minimal processing: basically auto levels, convert to grayscale, crop and resize. That's it.

Now let's see if a camouflaged dog will be visible in a field of 600 entries!

Ha, ha... me neither. The concept relies entirely on the distinctive background to stand out in the crowd. With more time, I might have been able to REALLY camouflage her or get a more interesting expression (she looks bored). This was like a 90 minute speed challenge for me, so I can't complain.

I still like it better than my October Free Study, though, and that one was one of my high scores, so I'll be looking at it for a while. :-(

OK, time to fess up & be honest.

I have looked at this shot over & over, and thought it was a scalvert original and placed well, it just didn't do "something" for me.
Don't get me wrong, as it's all done right, just maybe isn't my kind of shot? I certainly won't be a hypocrite and add to the ooohs and ahhs just to go with eveyone else. You are a very creative and gifted photographer, but as we all know, nobody can please everybody all the time.

Respectfully, and hopefully still friends?
:)

Brilliant and creative. I have come back several times to just enjoy this one. I loved reading the details of how you thought of doing this and your set-up.

And another very creative shot! When I saw this one I was amazed and stoned to the chair. I see this picture on the 1 , 2, 3, 4 place! Not lower! People who gave a 1 or 2 or 3 to this pic should be banned for voting :)

I bet you're happy with the result... well don't be YOU've BEEN ROBBED!

Congrat's Shannon! You are amazing. As for the 1's and 2's it's obvious: they couldn't find the dog. ;)

Hmm... nine votes of 1 or 2. Do we have some cats as members, or was this not black and white enough? ;-)

Shannon, when you are hot, you are hot. My warmest to find Man's best friend in all its glory. Congratulations on your 13th placing.

This is almost abstract. Some will hate it. Some will like it. I am really a bit unsure, but I think you captured the dog beautifully. I am just not sure about the background. It definitely makes it stand out, which is probably a good thing with so many entries. Good luck.

Well, good choice of colors to work with for this challenge. Expose and focus are all nice. Good catch lights in the eyes.

Great portrait of a dog, his eyes really speak a story here. Love the lighting in this shot. Only thing I am going to nitpick about is the composition. I havenĀ“t personally taken any dog portraits, so please feel free to ignore this but I have seen so many of them composed in "portrait" but not "landscape" as you do here so that if you would have gotten his paws in the shot too and eliminated more of the blanket on the left and right I think you would have had a killer shot. Anyway, gave it a 9.

Very original backdrop that fits perfectly with the dog and the title. A nice clear shot that doesn't rely on usm for definition. One of the best in the challenge for me.

A great b&w photograph. I would call it a busy photo, but the dog's markings blend in perfectly with the background. Makes it more interesting than a solid background. Title fits.

Wonderful composition, perfect expression on Waldog's face. The light in his eyes make the shot come alive.

I love malamutes! This is a good portrait. Generally the zebra print would be too distracting but it's not here, it frames the puppy well. -8-

roflol. Great title - adds interest to the photo but the image doesn't rely on it. There is an excellent softness to his (?) fur. 7

Very well taken shot... catchlights in the dog's eyes are perfect. My only complaint is the background you used competes with the dog. A solid color would have been better.

You can see where he (or she) comes up through on the lower left. Would have been perfect if it wasn't for that. Great job.

Excellent subject and composition for black and white.. the lighting is excellent, as is everything else about this photo. I'm not much of a fan of humorous titles when the image itself has not obvious humor in it though...
