[Apr. 13th, 2019 06:25:21 PM]

I met these boys when I was at a park looking for subjects that would work well in black and white. I had no intention of taking a portrait.
These two, probably 13, were there with their aunt, messing around at the edge of a small lake (or maybe a big pond . . . never sure where one leaves off and the other begins). I saw they were excited about something, so I paid attention and started walking around the end. When I got close enough, I hollered, "What do you have there?" One of the boys had caught a small fish with his hands. He threw it away just as I approached.
When he saw my camera, he said, "Oh, man, I should have gotten a picture! I'll catch another!" From her expression, it was clear that his aunt didn't think this was the best idea. So I quickly said, "I can do better than that . . . I can take YOUR picture!" Everyone thought that was a great idea - the aunt even wanted to pay me. She'd been meaning to take them to Penney's or someplace anyway :)
It was midday and the sun was bright. We started out in the sunshine, but it was clear the shadows were going to completely obscure their eyes. I suggested we move into shade and this was the best we could do. Would have LOVED to have more distance between them and the background. They started out standing woodenly side by side with these tight-lipped smiles. Turned out they both wore braces and were very self conscious about them, so I gave up on natural smiles. They were twins but not identical. When I suggested they horse around a bit, hoping for something more natural, the smaller one jumped on his brother's back and I got this one.
They wanted their aunt in with them so I got one of all three. Then they said to get one of just her. She was reluctant because "I don't take good pictures" . . . but they really, really wanted her to, so she did. I had her text me her e-mail and I sent her this, the color version of it, one of the three of them and two or three of her. The boys were THRILLED when I said that with their permission, I might enter one in a contest :) Nice, nice kids who obviously loved one another AND their aunt Shannon (whom they referred to affectionately as "the princess").

Engaging portrait of these young men who look so much alike. They seem to be sweet and genuine. It's an unusual pose, but it works completely. It's just so heartening to see people like them.

Terrific portrait. I would like to have seen the background a little more out of focus but that's nitpicking.
