A view of St Pauls cathedral, as seen from the Millennium Bridge over the Thames (behind the camera is the Tate Modern art gallery). Taken with my Canon EF-S 18-55 kit lens on a cold but reasonably clear evening (I'm surprised that that lens did so well on this shot TBH!). I was out on the middle of the bridge taking shots up the river to the Tower Bridge when I realised that St Pauls was nicely visible from my position, so I swung the tripod round and took a few shots while the tourists flowed past.

The original was rotated by 0.5 degrees (or there abouts) anticlockwise, cropped, a small bit of crane on the left was cloned out, the highlight boosted a tiny bit in levels/curves, resized, focus tweaked, and double bordered.

Great image. It is no surprise there were two of basically the same idea in this challenge... an old and well known lanmark combined with a new one from the 21st century. It is perfect for this challenge.

Congratulations Manic. You almost had you a ribbon with this one. It was one of my favorites in this challenge.

Thanks for all the great comments folks, can't believe that this shot did so well! I'm totally in love with this 20D - it's an amazing camera, and does well even with just the kit lens...

To be honest, this shot was a bit hurried, and I didn't really stop to think about framing properly (it was cold & windy up there on the bridge), otherwise I might have switched to a longer lens and got a cleaner original. Not to mention the amazing shot that Imagineer took of the same place (thanks for the comment BTW ;o), which kinda stole my thunder, but I'm definitely satisfied with the result. I'll have to remember to go back and reshoot there another time, see if I can't improve some more.

It's not every day that you get a personal best score, so thanks again!

Amazing to get a 6.9 and no ribbon. Congrats on your great finish though! I like the way you captured this with the people, even at night.

Beautiful night colors makes this compositon very interesting. The rails on the walkway leads ones eyes toward the main subject. Very nice.

Nice. Good composition. I always think that night shots tend to work better with a bit of color left in the sky... but this is very good and should do well. good luck

Great lighting the building has a nice glow to it. The idea of using the walk way to lead into the shotit a nice one but It seems totake up too much of the shot. IMO the foreground seems to present it self as the main part of the picutre rater than st. pauls itself.

Composition, lighting, slight motion blur, and border are all VERY well done. Bumping up. 9.

I like the blurry woman...

Challenge link: weak, appalling, totally missed the point. Rubbishy rubbish. Poor.

Image critique: poor, poor, poor. So very, very poor.

Out-of-challenge appeal: none whatsoever. Nil. Zeeeero.

... OK - if I'm really pushed to comment on it -
you've got a lovely scene here of the object (whatever it is) and a dynamic POV. The additional interest of the people is a nice touch, making for some lead-in lines as well as the bridgy thingy they're wobbling on.

The castle (is this where the Queen of America lives?) looks mighty pretty all lit up and stuff, and I think you've done it justice. Highlights are just a little blown, but I don't think I've seen the White House look so good.

Really nice landmark shot and the people in the foreground give it a good perspective. Great job.

magnificent

So sharp, and so well exposed.

Really nice. The colors are muted but tack sharp. If you could just get the darn people to move out of the way! :) Nice job.

The lighting, leading lines and movement all just make this an image I have a hard time tearing myself away from. It could have been a boring, ordinary image, but you instead created something with life and a light that just draws and keeps you in.

Nicely handled with good exposure on the subject.
I like the motion blur as it adds an artistic touch and contrasts with the sharpness of the rest of the image..giving it a "painterly" feel

good exposure, really sharp image, very well done - 8

Nice take on a definite landmark, to Americcans at least. To bad the folks in the foreground wouldn't hold still.
12/07/2004 11:20:16 AM
Awesome lighting, it may have been more effective to crop out the busy foreground with the pedestrians.
12/07/2004 05:57:35 AM
Nice commentary on the permanence of institutions versus the insubstantial nature of individuals.

I find that the building on the left detracts from the overall picture. The idea of using the bridge to pull thew eye in is a good one but the narrow gap between the building does help.

Good Luck

Beautiful and i like capture with bridge... but i would letted girl pass bit further...at back people are much less distracting.

Nice clear, crips shot.7
12/06/2004 02:16:11 AM
Stunning, stunning, stunning... lowe the walkers in the foreground contrasting with the static building... beats the pants of the standard night shot with the moving car lights in the foreground.

Great...9. you're in with a great shot at the top three here.
