Taken during sunset last Saturday. The most amazing clouds I've ever seen.

Post Challenge Edit:
I'm so happy about this picture, especially since I almost missed it. A co-worker called me up and told me to grab my camera and run outside. So I did and said WOW! I was so excited that I didn't even pay much attention to the camera settings. In hind sight I could've stopped down some to get a sharper picture but I didn't have a tripod. I had some repeat questions questions during voting so I'll respond here.

Perhaps the crop could have been better because there is actually about 10% more sky in the original picture but there was a huge ugly light post in the way. I couldn't clone it out because this was a Basic Editing challenge. As for the horizon, some wanted to see more and some not at all. Well, if I had shown more you would've seen more of the ugly street which is not good, and if I had removed it I think the picture would've lost perspective and the size of the clouds would've have been lost. As for the colors, they are actually pushed quite a bit but it is actually a direct result of what "Auto Levels" did to the picture. I normally don't use Auto Levels but I'm glad I tried it with this picture. Anyway, thanks again for all your comments and votes. It's very much appreciated.

My sister-in-law (not a photographer) got one of those "Come out and bring your camera!" shots last winter. Also Co. Springs. Awesome mamata clouds. Colorado Springs is one of those places you get great sky shots. Learn to set your Eos to bracket without looking at the controls.

This shot is something else! Weird clouds... Can you say Close Encounters? I think the cropping is great. It shows the blue skies behind the clouds and, as you said, the building gives you a perspective on how HUGE the spaceship cloud was!!! Well done and a great ribbon winner!

Wow! Congrats on a very well deserved blue, and the 5th highest-rated photo ever for the Digital Rebel (144th overall, I think). Now get a high-res version uploaded to DPCPrints pronto and tell Mike Daniels where to find them!

oh, REALLY strong. This is the only "atmosphere" photo I've seen thus far int he challenge that isa ctually working to the topic. I might prefer it with no earth references at all, but to do that you'd have to photoshop the houses and trees out: you wouldn't want to crop that tight ont his.

12/20/2004 10:50:07 AM
Disgustingly cool. The silhouettes at the bottom right look oversharpened. the haloes there detract a bit from the picture.

this is an incredibly beautiful image, especially given that this was an open challenge. all the same, it doesn't really convey wind to me. but what do i know...i've never been good at interpreting challenge descriptions--this will probably ribbon anyway.

The colors and movement of the coulds are great. I also like how there is a bit of blue at the top showing the 'normal' color of the sky. I would have liked to see a bit more of the cut-off horizon line.

Like the color, contrast, captured in this dramatic photograph. Ok, so the wind may be blowing in the sky, moving the clouds, but I see no evidence in this photo that is blowing on earth. I know, nit picking, so I'll bump it up a place.

12/15/2004 04:29:28 PM
Returning for a revisit. I think this sky is quite fascinating and your post processing almost lends a surreal beauty. I think you did a good job in creating a lot of drama here. I question whether you used gradient density effects on this image, as under basic editing rules, that is to my understanding forbidden. I'll assume your editing steps were within the limits of the challenge rules. Well done!
