Killer! But why would you put a corkscrew to a champagne cork? A minor glitch to a beauty shot.

Great shot! Congratulations on your win.
I especially like the way you incorporated a mechanical theme, and melded it with the natural beauty of the fluid water.
To all of those people that did not think of this concept, and are now saying it is not mechanical. I say, "sour grapes make good whine."
Of course this is mechanical!
Very brilliant idea. I have not yet entered, and am new to this hobby, and you have inspired me to think differently.
Thanks for a great shot and once again, congrats.

Why don't people think this is mechanical? A bottle opener is a mechanical aid! Great shot and congratulations!

Not exactly mechanical but the shot itself is very nice :) I like it very much :) Good work.

also that is not showing any mechanical subject ...that is again how i see it

This was my top pick in the challenge. Just wanted to say congrats on the very well done image. I don't often spend a lot of time looking at images during voting after I've voted, but I kept coming back to this one over and over thinking, "How did they DO that?". Very nicely done, again, and obviously a lot of effort and time was put into this image and it shows! This is definitely going into my favorites.

There were 7 corkscrews submitted in this challenge - great idea for "Mechanical" but only one imagedemonstrated a significant amount of effort, thought and creativity. Your photo is a well deserving ribbon winner - congrats on some great photography.

I didn't vote in this challenge but in browsing through the entries I came across this picture and it was clear that it would capture the Blue Ribbon. Congrats on a fantastic photo!

About the technical:

To manage the timing , an electronic sound activated device was used to trigger the flash. It is an simple homemade circuit.

To control the light is more difficult, as splashs are unpredictables, I tried to put white reflectors everywhere possible. An black background was positioned one meter far.

As champagne was expensive, an cheaper substitute was used. Sorry for this non glamourous true.

Thanks all again.

Edited: About the tries, I did an set of 25 shots, went to the computer an analyze at the monitor. As none was good, I did another set of 25, which produced 3 good images. I think I selected the best one.

Very nice touch. Light is perfect and you've managed to get even some sparkle in some brilliant droplets. It feels so done, but still is elusive as it's natural enough. Can't say yet if that's ribbon, but it's good anyway.

Theme:
Yes, very good idea to photo for me. Mechanical genre for sure. Outstanding objects, put together into an outstanding composition. No doubt for me: 10

Technical:
BG unique and black, perfect. Sharpness very good, some minor issues with halos, but might be due to submission. Contrast and density are very convincing here, the chrome is a hard and tough thing, moderate lack of 'black'/'very dark' areas on the corkscrew itself. A black card very close at the left might have helped a lot. But the corkscrew has still enough 'touch' and 'form'. Also the drops and the liquid are well balanced frozen and blurred - good value of dynamic/speed and frozen details, excellent for me. Distracting the viewable brighter areas within the darker BG, also at the right above corner. That might be due to a not full compensation within the layers, if not by retouch, it should have for sure be copied out, removed by retouch. Crop and compositional aspects are good, but not fully convincing me, 'cause the lack of some virtual guiding thirds etc.
To come short: 8

Expression/Impact: More than enough for me, so 10

Result / 3 = 9,33

Impressive! The little bursts of light reflection seem contrived, though, especially on the bottleneck and arm of the opener. Regardless, it's tops in my book. 10

This photo is superb! There's so much energy caught. the addition of twinkling stars adds a lot to the festive mood. You can even read the cork. As the champagne bounces off of everything, with the background, it appears to create a starry night! I would love to hear how you did this shot. My only 10!

12/29/2004 02:14:37 PM
This is techincally well-done, but I'm not sure how the stopped motion helps the mechanical theme, besides, we don't use corkscrews on champagne... For these reasons, I rank it somewhat lower than I'd otherwise do.
