I like this photo, it is very clean to me. Keep up the good work. I wish I could give some pointers but I wouldn't know how to make it better. Maybe with some different lighting to make the shadows stronger and more crisp. But for a first submission I think it was great. Oh and by the way, the count is up to 233.

Ok here it goes. I voted this photo a 4, because of the lack of "Wow" for me. It is a great picture technically. I feel it could have been better if you used the rule of thirds. The egg is right in the middle which makes it real boring to look at. The lighting is good, but maybe use another light on the right side of the egg to get rid of the shadow. Or if you like the shadow on the egg then maybe use a black background. That would hide the shadow in the background but keep the shadow on the egg. hmmm..
Not sure what else I would have done to make it better. Keep shooting!!

Hrm. Well, it's a very good picture of an egg, but I don't know that I see it as a powerful or interesting *image*, as an image.

Ed, the simplicity of your subject leaves little room for error. You basically have only shape, texture and color. I don't think the shadows helped you here either because none of them are strong. Or maybe there are too many shades of shadow. A slightly greater dof might have helped. ie. the edges seem to have an aurora rather than being crisp.I had rather have lost some sharpness up front. You might try an even lighting all around the edges while not overlighting the front so as to have no shadows or by backlighting so your background color is more even. I think you are "Presenting" an egg in this shot and some of the other features have taken some of that away.
I hope this helps. I did an egg shot once. It wasn't too good. Hard to show the texture and not blow out the white. I liked your choice of brown egg. Maybe something holding the egg would have added interest. And something less than a straight on shot.
Welcome to dpc, where everyone is an expert. Just kidding. Good Luck Ed.

The egg challenge was very hard to judge this week. When there are so many good images to choose from some get short changed. This is one of them. There is no way this should have been rated below my entry that got a 5.2. One of my "top three" for the week "A Scrambled Egg" finished 140th.

a bit generic, but very good focus, light and shadow

Halfway done and this iis my favorite- I guess the challange proves that eggs are hard to get in focus. I think I have to give you a 9 though, the composition is so simple (not easy simple, uncomplicated simple).
