The subject is highly original. The shapes are very interesting. The lighting is ideal. And the textures of the wood and grass clearly make this rustic setting remarkable. It's a really strong shot.

While having the sea in the background adds a sense of place to the photo, I found the additional horizontal lines it offered both cluttered and confused by their close proximity to the tops of the houses. It's a quibble; and I'm not sure there could have been a way to fix this without ruining the shot.

Thanks to all that commented. This photograph was taken on Holy Island (aka Lindisfarne) in Northumberland, UK. For me, this area was an unfound jewel until 2004, when I decided to meander my way down the east coast on my way home from a trip to Scotland.
I am not sure what the history of these huts is, but I have only seen them on the island, but these particular ones (which are adjacent to Lindisfarne Castle) are not the only ones there. I would guess that the old boats were originally used this way as a recycling measure and should certainly be waterproof.

They certainly are ... I hope to find out if this is the result of tradition, humor, or recycling.

What an interesting subject and great colors. My only suggestion for improvement here would be to get a lower angle so that the top of the first boathouse would be extended into the sky background. As it is, the top edge of the boat house blends in with the horizon effectively splitting the frame in half. A lower angle would have pulled the shot together more. I still give it a 9.

I confess, I'm a color junkie. I love the colors in this shot. The interesting shape of the houses compliments the curving lines along the shoreline. This would be a great place to shoot at sunet. Beautifully done. 9

The distinctively shaped boathouses are interesting enough to serve as an effective focal point for this sweeping landscape. Excellent colors. I wish the cloud formation was more balanced.. as it is, they are clumped along the horizon which skews the balance of the composition. Overall a very well composed shot.

hahaha this has to be the funniest shot I have seen so far in this challenge. It looks like a bunch of outhouses. Well done and keep up the good work in 2005. <7>

very nice and unique location. Maybe would have given more weight to the floor - as is there is a near 50-50 split with the sky and land. well taken technicaly

I have to get to iceland...some great photo opportunities there. (Assuming that is where this was taken). A simple and effective image. Nicely composed and i like the simple black border.

This one made me giggle! I love the shape of these buildings, your title is most appropriate. I wonder where this photo was taken?

Really, really fine, deceptively simple but so carefully composed. The nearest "house" slightly protrudes above the horizon; the next slightly above the field/water line. I can see the care that went into this one. The muted tonalities lower right are very effective.
